A nearly flat S&P 500 masked a mixed close

U.S. stocks ended Wednesday, August 26, 2026 with little net movement in the two broad growth benchmarks but a clearer decline in blue chips. The S&P 500 slipped 1.58 points, or 0.02%, to 7,675.70. The Nasdaq-100 added 15.32 points, or 0.05%, to 29,224.52, while the Dow Jones Industrial Average fell 113 points, or 0.21%, to 53,464. The split shows why a single headline index can miss the texture of a session: technology-heavy shares were roughly steady, while the Dow finished lower.

August 26, 2026 regular-session close

Volatility eased as Treasury yields edged higher

The Cboe VIX closed at 15.21, down 0.24 point, or 1.55%, from 15.45 on August 25. The U.S. Treasury’s daily par-yield curve put the 2-year yield at 4.19% and the 10-year yield at 4.66%. Both were two basis points above Tuesday. A lower VIX alongside slightly higher yields and mixed equity indexes describes this particular close; it does not establish a durable relationship for the next session.

Wheel lens

A VIX close of 15.21 summarizes expected S&P 500 volatility over roughly 30 days; it is not an executable option quote for AEHR or ORCL. Contract-level context still requires the exact expiry and strike, bid and ask, open interest, implied volatility, event calendar, full cash or share obligation, and assignment tolerance.

Aehr fell while Oracle advanced

Within YieldCove’s live watchlist, Aehr Test Systems (AEHR) closed at $91.12, down $4.47, or 4.68%, from $95.59. Oracle (ORCL) finished at $148.87, up $4.11, or 2.84%, from $144.76. Cboe’s delayed closing quotes and Nasdaq’s stock screener agreed on both regular-session closes and dollar moves. Those sources verify the size and direction of the moves; closing data by themselves do not prove a company-specific cause.

Two wheel-relevant watchlist closes

Moves in opposite directions can alter option moneyness in different ways. An existing cash-secured put on a falling stock can move closer to assignment, while an existing covered call on a rising stock can move closer to or further into the money. Neither closing price reveals the next session’s spread, skew, contract-specific implied volatility or executable premium. Option premiums are quoted per share, one standard contract normally represents 100 shares, and the full collateral or delivery obligation matters more than the daily percentage move alone.

What this close establishes

August 26 ended with the S&P 500 and Nasdaq-100 nearly unchanged, the Dow modestly lower, the VIX down and benchmark Treasury yields two basis points higher. AEHR and ORCL provided contrasting verified watchlist moves. These dated values are reference points rather than an order instruction; company events, contract liquidity and the next live quote can materially change the wheel context even when the official close remains fixed.

Bottom line

The session was mixed rather than broadly risk-on or risk-off. Lower volatility, slightly higher yields and diverging watchlist moves do not identify a favourable strike, premium or trade. This market wrap is educational information only, not personalized financial advice or an order instruction.
