Technology lagged at Friday’s close

U.S. stocks finished the regular session on Friday, August 28, 2026 with a measured decline in the broad market and a larger loss in the technology-heavy benchmark. The Dow Jones Industrial Average was almost unchanged, slipping 9 points, or 0.02%, to 53,560. Volatility eased even as Treasury yields rose

The Cboe VIX closed at 14.43, down 0.08 point, or 0.55%, from 14.51 on Thursday. In the official Treasury curve, the 2-year par yield rose 14 basis points to 4.34%, while the 10-year yield increased 6 basis points to 4.73%. The simultaneous drop in the VIX and rise in benchmark yields describes Friday’s close, but it does not establish which input will dominate the next session. A weekend can also introduce news before Monday’s opening quotes become executable.

Wheel lens

A VIX close of 14.43 summarizes expected S&P 500 volatility over roughly 30 days; it is not an executable option quote for AMZN or HOOD. Contract-level context still requires the exact expiry and strike, bid and ask, open interest, implied volatility, event calendar, full cash or share obligation, and assignment tolerance.

Amazon rose while Robinhood fell

Among wheel-relevant watchlist names, Amazon (AMZN) closed at $266.43, up $10.17, or 3.97%, from $256.26. Robinhood Markets (HOOD) finished at $104.26, down $5.50, or 5.01%, from $109.76. Cboe’s delayed closing quotes and Nasdaq’s stock screener agreed on both closes, dollar changes and rounded percentages. Those sources verify the magnitude and direction of the moves; closing data alone do not prove a company-specific cause.

HOOD$104.26−$5.50 / −5.01%16.21M
Two contrasting watchlist closes

Moves in opposite directions can change option moneyness in different ways. An existing covered call on a rising stock can move closer to or further into the money, while an existing cash-secured put on a falling stock can move closer to assignment. Neither close reveals Monday’s spread, skew, contract-specific implied volatility or executable premium. Option premiums are quoted per share, one standard contract normally represents 100 shares, and the full collateral or delivery obligation matters more than the daily percentage move alone.

What Friday’s close establishes

August 28 ended with the Nasdaq-100 underperforming the S&P 500, the Dow nearly flat, the VIX slightly lower and benchmark Treasury yields higher. AMZN and HOOD provided two verified but opposite watchlist moves. These dated closing values are reference points, not a forecast: weekend headlines, company events, contract liquidity and the first live quote on August 31 can materially change the wheel context.

Bottom line

The close was softer in technology than in blue chips, while volatility eased and yields rose. That combination does not identify a favourable strike, premium or trade. This market wrap is educational information only, not personalized financial advice or an order instruction.
