By the August 18, 2026 close, midweek was a technology-led pullback: the Nasdaq-100 fell 1.68%, the S&P 500 slipped 0.69%, and the Cboe VIX rose to 15.84. Premium sellers face slightly richer index insurance pricing and less cushion on several AI-linked watchlist names—without a disorderly volatility spike.

Wheel takeaway

Damage concentrated in cap-weighted technology. Equal-weight $RSP fell only 0.45% on August 18 versus 0.68% for $SPY and 1.69% for $QQQ—rebuild cushion math name-by-name.

What moved and why

Tech and AI infrastructure led. The Nasdaq Composite closed 26,289.71 (−1.33%) and $QQQ $717.51 (−1.69%). Watchlist pressure included $CRDO $245.97 (−13.03%), $CRWV $93.17 (−12.10%), $NBIS $248.43 (−7.60%), and $META $543.67 (−4.45%). Lower spot shrinks cash-secured-put cushions—mechanics, not orders.

Volatility rose from a calm base. VIX printed 14.25 → 15.19 → 15.84 on August 14, 17 and 18 (+11.2% week-to-date). Treasury par yields on August 18 kept the 2-year at 4.19% and the 10-year at 4.71% (10-year 4.68% on August 14). The same day, $LQD rose 0.13% while $HYG eased 0.10%.

Primary AI-infrastructure catalyst. NVIDIA’s August 17 Form 8-K and press exhibit detail a partnership with SB Energy on PORTS-Pike in Pike County, Ohio, hosting NVIDIA AI compute with OpenAI as customer. Initial capacity 4.25 IT-GW, option 3.75 IT-GW (~8 IT-GW). NVIDIA also disclosed a $1.5 billion SB Energy investment and an initial $80 million community-benefits fund, with service language toward 2028—multi-year infrastructure, not next-quarter revenue.

IV check

Index vol is firmer week-to-date (VIX 15.84 vs 14.25). After double-digit AI-linked drops, rebuild each chain’s bid/ask, open interest and events in the broker. VIX is not an executable single-name quote.

Fresh educational zones

Aligned with published YieldCove Research public stances only—member-only entry bands are not reprinted.

  • $ORCL — Hold, Elevated. Spot $142.79 on August 18, about 5.1% below August 14 ($150.52). Public research frames AI backlog versus a capital-spending stress test.
  • $MU — Accumulate, Elevated. Close $940.76 (−7.02% day; −3.2% vs August 14’s $971.66). AI-memory cash-flow case versus cycle discipline—wide ranges favor wider cushions and strict size.
  • $AMZN — Hold, Elevated. Close $259.45 (−1.22% WTD). Three profit engines against an AI build that pushed trailing free cash flow below zero; steadier than pure AI-infra while the 10-year sits near 4.7%.

Classroom: cushion shrink

A cash-secured put’s cushion is (spot − strike) / spot. If spot falls and the strike is unchanged, cushion compresses even when the per-share credit already collected does not change.

FieldFriday ref.After −10% spot
Spot$100.00$90.00
Short put strike$90.00$90.00
Cushion10.0%0.0%
Credit / share$1.50$1.50
Breakeven$88.50$88.50
Cash reserved$9,000$9,000
Illustrative CSP math (educational; not a live quote)

Lesson

The $1.50 credit still sets breakeven at $88.50, but distance to assignment collapsed with spot. A quieter VIX rise plus a sharp single-name drop can matter more than either fact alone.

Drill

For one open short put, recompute cushion, breakeven (strike − credit/share), and collateral (strike × 100). Label delayed inputs and rebuild in the broker.

Rest of week

Nasdaq earnings Aug 19–21 feature retail/industrials ($ADI, $TJX, $LOW, $TGT, then $WMT, $DE) with no current watchlist name on those calendars. Watch whether tech stabilizes while the 10-year holds near 4.71%.
