CRWV wheel watch: the $65 put pays 5.9%, earnings inside
The Aug. 21 $65 put offers a 5.92% collateral return at a $3.85 reference credit, with breakeven 22.2% below the $78.64 spot snapshot. CoreWeave’s expected Aug. 11 earnings date and heavy financing needs make the rich premium an earnings-aware risk, not easy income.

The setup in 30 seconds
CoreWeave rents AI-focused cloud infrastructure. The educational setup is one cash-secured CRWV Aug. 21 $65 put, using a $3.85-per-share reference credit inside the verified $3.75–$4.00 market. That contract expires in 37 days, and the expected Aug. 11 earnings date sits inside it, so this is an earnings-aware setup rather than a quiet income trade.
CRWV led the fresh watchlist screen because the $65 line paired a lower-half delta of about 0.23 with 5,613 contracts of open interest and a 6.5% bid-ask spread. Its breakeven sits 22.2% below the $78.64 spot snapshot. This after-hours recovery preserves the delayed 10:04 a.m. ET dossier: the 10:30 a.m. entry window has passed, so rebuild the quote and re-price at the next open using a limit order only.
New to cash-secured puts?
Selling one put collects a credit in exchange for the obligation to buy 100 shares at the strike if assigned. “Cash-secured” means keeping the full $6,500 strike value available. The premium reduces the effective share cost, but it does not stop losses below breakeven.
The trade
| Field | Reference |
|---|---|
| Ticker / strategy | CRWV cash-secured put |
| Contract | Aug. 21, 2026 $65 put |
| Time / delta | 37 DTE · delta about 0.23 |
| Entry | $3.80–$3.90 limit only · no market orders |
| Reference credit | $3.85/share · $385/contract |
| Cash reserved | $6,500 |
| Breakeven | $61.15 · 22.2% below $78.64 spot |
| Max return | 5.92% in 37 days · about 58.4% annualized |
| Max loss | $6,115 if CRWV falls to zero, before fees |
At the $3.85 reference, the premium is 5.92% of collateral. Annualizing that one-period ratio produces 58.4%; it is comparison math, not a forecast of repeatable income. The same math places the effective share cost at $61.15, below the $65 strike and the current 52-week low.
Why this stock, why now
Technicals. RSI(14) was 35.9 at the July 14 close: weak, but not below the usual 30 oversold line. The $79.94 close sat under the 20-, 50- and 200-day moving averages of $96.72, $104.87 and $98.76. By 10:04 a.m. ET on July 15, volume was 3.55 million shares, only 0.12× the prior 20-session full-day average of 29.47 million, so that ratio is an early-session reading. The nearest visible floor is the $63.80 52-week low, just under the strike; resistance sits around $83–$86. In plain terms: the strike has a cushion, but the trend still points down.
Valuation and business quality. StockAnalysis showed CRWV at 12.28× enterprise value to sales, versus 20.53× for IREN and 56.85× for NBIS in the same July 15 snapshot. That relative discount is not the same as cheap: the March-quarter filing shows $24.86 billion of current plus non-current debt and a $740 million net loss. Revenue was $2.078 billion, up 111.6% from $982 million a year earlier. In plain terms: demand is growing quickly, but financing and build-out risk remain large.
Income is rich because risk is rich
Cboe’s 30-day IV was 100.5%, while 62 AlphaQuery observations averaged 92.2% over roughly three months. The $65 put itself carried about 100.8% IV. A simple volatility estimate implies an expiry move near $25.15 in either direction; premium this large is compensation for a wide range of outcomes.
Macro and calendar. The U.S. Census Bureau schedules the June retail-sales release for July 16, and Nasdaq’s calendar also lists retail sales and jobless claims that morning. More important for this contract, Nasdaq and StockAnalysis both estimate CoreWeave earnings on Aug. 11; StockAnalysis labels it after the close. Nasdaq shows no ex-dividend date. In plain terms: the contract crosses both macro data and an earnings report, so the lower delta is deliberate.
Earnings are inside the contract
The Aug. 11 date is estimated, not company-confirmed, and must be checked again. A revenue, margin, financing or guidance surprise can gap CRWV through the $63.80 low before an adjustment is practical. Screens rank premium, not safety.
The exit plan
- Take profit: buy back near $1.93, about 50% of the $3.85 reference credit.
- Time exit: close or roll at 14–21 DTE if the position is unresolved.
- Roll trigger: if CRWV closes below $63.80 with more than 21 DTE, consider rolling out and down only for a credit.
- Assignment path: assignment means owning at the $61.15 breakeven; that only fits an independently chosen risk budget, after which covered calls may continue the wheel.
What would invalidate this
The setup fails if CRWV closes below $63.80 without a quick reclaim, if the option spread widens above 8% of midpoint, or if the earnings date changes without a fresh review. It also fails when $6,500 cannot remain fully reserved.
What could go wrong
- Earnings gap: a weak report or financing surprise pushes CRWV below $63.80, making assignment likely and expanding the stock loss.
- Balance-sheet strain: debt and build-out needs pressure margins or funding, keeping the shares below the moving averages even as revenue grows.
- Execution slippage: delayed quotes or a wider market produce a worse fill; a limit order protects price discipline but cannot guarantee execution.
Beginner corner
DTE means days to expiry; delta is an approximate sensitivity and rough probability proxy; IV is implied volatility; breakeven is strike minus credit; assignment means buying 100 shares; a roll closes one option and opens a later one; ROC is return on collateral.
