NBIS wheel watch: $140 put leaves a 38.4% cushion

The August 21 $140 put offered an $11.45 reference credit and a 38.4% breakeven cushion at 11:50 a.m. ET. NVIDIA’s 9.3% beneficial-ownership filing drove a sharp catalyst while 177.80% put IV signalled exceptional risk.

The setup in 30 seconds

Nebius builds AI-cloud infrastructure and software for developers and large customers. At 11:50 a.m. ET on July 21, NBIS was $208.56, about 14.2% above its July 20 close after NVIDIA disclosed 9.3% beneficial ownership in a Schedule 13G. The filing says that total includes ordinary shares and shares underlying a pre-funded warrant, so the catalyst is real but more nuanced than a simple open-market purchase. The educational ticket uses the August 21 $140 cash-secured put with 31 days to expiry (DTE) and an earnings-aware delta of 0.158. A $11.45 per-share reference credit puts breakeven at $128.55, or 38.4% below the $208.56 snapshot. NBIS led the eligible watchlist screen because the $140 line combined deep liquidity, bottom-band delta, an older support shelf and the richest verified premium; that premium measures uncertainty, not safety.

New to cash-secured puts?

Selling one put creates an obligation to buy 100 shares at the strike if assigned. “Cash-secured” means reserving the full $14,000 strike collateral instead of relying on leverage. The credit lowers the effective share cost, but a collapse below breakeven can still consume most of that cash.

Nasdaq and Cboe both showed $11.20 bid / $11.70 ask, 2,083 contracts of open interest and 75 contracts traded. The 4.37% midpoint spread cleared the 8% gate, while Cboe measured 177.80% IV and delta −0.1584. These are delayed snapshots, not fill promises. Why this stock, why now

Technicals. Through the July 20 close, RSI(14) was 29.4, an oversold reading matched by Yahoo and Nasdaq histories. The $208.56 intraday spot remained below the 20-day average of $224.72 and 50-day average of $224.58, but above the 200-day average of $138.21. Volume at the snapshot was 0.60× the prior 20-session full-day average. The nearest swing low was $164.31 on July 17; the $140 strike sits in an older $132.70–$146.98 late-April base. In plain terms: the rebound is sharp, but the shorter trend is not repaired and the strike relies on older support.

Valuation and growth. Two public screens put Nebius at 53.5×–59.9× current enterprise value to sales, versus 11.7×–12.0× for CoreWeave and 7.2×–7.4× for Oracle. Nebius and its SEC-filed release reported first-quarter 2026 group revenue of $399.0 million, up 684% from $50.9 million a year earlier. In plain terms: growth is exceptional, but the multiple leaves little room for slower capacity delivery or weaker AI demand.

Income and calendar

The selected put’s 177.80% IV was far above AlphaQuery’s 114.88% three-month mean and Barchart’s 116.32% three-month measure; Barchart’s current weighted IV was 168.44%. The $11.45 credit equals 8.18% of collateral for 31 days, or 96.3% annualized as comparison math—not a forecast. Nasdaq/Zacks and StockAnalysis both estimate earnings on August 6, inside the contract, but Nebius had not confirmed that date; the example therefore stays at the bottom of the delta band.

Catalysts and macro. NVIDIA’s July 20 filing is the clean current catalyst. Nebius also announced a $775 million senior secured debt facility on July 17, showing both funding access and the capital intensity of its buildout. Initial jobless claims are scheduled for July 24 at 8:30 a.m. ET; Nasdaq lists no dividend date. Reported analyst changes were dropped because no primary note or second independent major source passed the evidence test. In plain terms: the stake disclosure can support sentiment, but financing, delivery and earnings risk still drive the option price.

The exit plan

  • Take profit: buy back around $4.58–$5.73 after retaining roughly 60–50% of the $11.45 reference credit.
  • Time exit: if unresolved, close or roll around 14–21 DTE, roughly July 31 to August 7.
  • Roll trigger: if NBIS closes below $164.30 with more than 21 DTE, reassess and consider only an out-and-down roll that still produces a credit.
  • Assignment path: assignment means owning 100 shares at the $128.55 breakeven. Covered calls may continue the wheel, but they cannot erase a stock loss.

What would invalidate this

The setup stops fitting the screen if NBIS closes below $164.30 with more than 21 DTE, if the $140-put spread widens above 8%, or if an issuer earnings date or financing update changes the event map. A break below the $132.70–$146.98 base requires a fresh ownership test.

What could go wrong

  1. Catalyst reversal: the NVIDIA-stake excitement could fade, sending NBIS back through the $164.31 swing low before the option can be adjusted.
  2. Valuation reset: a 53.5×–59.9× EV/S range can compress even while revenue grows quickly.
  3. Execution and financing risk: data-centre delays, customer concentration or more expensive capital could push the shares toward or through $140; the $1,145 credit is small beside the $12,855 capital at risk.

Beginner corner

DTE means days to expiry. Delta is a rough sensitivity measure, not a probability guarantee. IV is the option market’s volatility input. Breakeven is strike minus credit. Assignment means buying the shares at the strike. Open interest counts outstanding contracts, while volume counts contracts traded in the session.
