Delayed cross-asset snapshot near 04:00 ET. Hang Seng and European percentages are omitted where comparison closes differed across sources.

The pressure was broad enough to matter, but not uniform enough to support a single-cause story. Japan's Nikkei 225 closed down 0.74% and Shanghai lost 0.59%. The Hang Seng was lower at 25,502.00, while early Europe was mixed around small moves. The U.S. pattern was more concentrated in growth shares: the Nasdaq-100 contract fell more than three times as much as the Dow contract in percentage terms.

Rates remained a firm reference point. Official U.S. Treasury data put the August 21 par yields at 4.24% for two years and 4.74% for ten years. Near 04:00 ET, the U.S. Dollar Index rose 0.18% to about 98.974, October WTI fell 1.71% to $85.57, and December gold gained 0.37% to $4,698.00. Oil and gold moved in opposite directions, so the commodity board did not send one clean inflation signal.

A quiet federal data calendar

The official BLS, BEA and Census schedules list no major release for Monday, August 24. That removes the usual fixed-time data shock from the morning plan, but it does not make the session event-free. With no headline federal release to reset expectations, the opening direction may depend more on rates, energy, technology breadth and company news. Tuesday's BLS schedule begins at 10:00 ET, so readers should keep today's calm calendar separate from the rest of the week.

AAPL read-through: Xiaomi introduced the Xring O3, one year after launching its first proprietary smartphone processor, the Xring O1. Reuters reported that two unidentified sources expect TSMC to manufacture O3 on a 3-nanometre process; Xiaomi and TSMC did not comment on the manufacturer, process or shipment target. Separately, Notebookcheck reported that Xiaomi officially identified its coming Xiaomi 18 Fold as an early O3 device and set a September 2026 launch window. The verified takeaway is competitive rather than predictive: another large handset maker is bringing more processor design in-house, following the vertical-integration path already used by Apple, Samsung and Huawei.

Confirmed versus reported

Xiaomi's O3 announcement and September foldable window are confirmed. TSMC production, the 3-nanometre process and shipment estimates remain source-reported plans, not company-confirmed terms.

What to watch today

  • Technology breadth after 09:30 ET: a Nasdaq-100 futures decline of 0.82% needs confirmation from semiconductors, software and mega-cap platforms.
  • The Treasury curve: use 4.24% at two years and 4.74% at ten years as Friday's official references; compare any live move with those completed-session levels.
  • Oil near $85.57: watch whether the 1.71% overnight decline broadens into energy shares or stays mostly in the futures contract.
  • AAPL supply-chain read-through: distinguish Xiaomi's confirmed custom-chip launch from the unconfirmed production and shipment details.
  • Volatility: 15.13 is the official August 21 VIX close, not a live Monday pre-market print.

The opening setup is cautious: technology futures led lower, Asia declined, oil weakened and the dollar firmed, while the federal data calendar is light. Xiaomi's new chip adds a real competitive milestone for the smartphone supply chain, but several manufacturing details remain attributed rather than confirmed.
