$AEHR's 21% slide exposes the risk beneath calmer markets

The S&P 500 gained 1.15%, but $AEHR fell 21.05%. Lower index volatility hid large stock moves; CPI, retail sales and bank earnings bring fresh event risk next week.

What you need to know

• The S&P 500 gained 1.15%, but $AEHR lost 21.05%; calmer index volatility hid large stock-specific moves. • Services prices rose as consumer sentiment weakened; inflation risk survived the softer mood. • CPI arrives Wednesday, followed by PPI and retail sales Thursday; next week concentrates several sources of event risk.

The week in 5 points

  • Large caps recovered: the S&P 500 rose 1.15% and the Dow gained 0.93%, while small caps slipped 0.91%.
  • Leadership shifted: utilities led the sector ETFs, while technology finished last. The Nasdaq Composite gained 0.64%.
  • Inflation stayed sticky: the services prices index reached 74.0, while Michigan’s year-ahead inflation expectation reached 4.7%.
  • Rates eased slightly: the 10-year market yield fell 3.3 basis points, but remained above 5%.
  • Company risk stayed large: four of the five biggest absolute watchlist moves were declines; next week brings inflation and bank earnings.

The rebound favoured utilities more than technology

The week of October 5–9 was positive for large-cap benchmarks, but uneven underneath. The S&P 500 ended at 7,811.54, while the Russell 2000 finished at 2,806.98. The Nasdaq-100 rose only 0.24%, separate from the Composite’s 0.64% gain.

Nine of the eleven sector ETFs gained. Utilities, staples and energy each rose more than 3.5%, while technology and industrials declined. That looks like a rotation toward steadier businesses; it does not prove investors abandoned growth.

Services stayed busy while households felt the squeeze

September’s ISM services PMI was 54.9, down from 55.4 but still above the 50 threshold for expansion. The prices index rose to 74.0 from 72.6. Business activity held up, yet suppliers were charging more.

Michigan’s preliminary October sentiment fell to 46.3 from 48.1. Expected inflation over the next year increased to 4.7% from 4.6%; the long-run expectation rose to 3.5% from 3.4%. These are survey expectations, not measured inflation.

Initial jobless claims were 197,000, versus a revised 199,000; continuing claims increased by 17,000 to 1.716 million. August’s trade deficit widened to $105.6 billion from a revised $92.8 billion. Together, those releases describe mixed demand and labour conditions, rather than one clean economic signal.

Lower bond yields did not erase the inflation question

The 10-year market-yield series ended near 5.24%, down 3.3 basis points from last Friday. One basis point is 0.01 percentage point. The VIX’s weekly intraday range was 14.77–16.46, with a Friday vendor mark of 14.84.

Wednesday’s Fed minutes described September’s unanimous quarter-point hike to 3.75–4.00%. Most participants saw another increase as likely appropriate before year-end, depending on incoming data. The release explained an earlier decision; it was not a new rate announcement.

Growing sales still met pressure on profits

PepsiCo ($PEP) reported $25.274 billion in quarterly revenue, up 5.6%, and core earnings of $2.34 per share. It lowered full-year core constant-currency earnings growth guidance to 1–2%, from the low end of 4–6%. Stronger sales did not remove the pressure on its profit outlook.

Delta ($DAL) reported adjusted revenue of $17.6 billion and adjusted earnings of $1.72 per share. Adjusted fuel expense rose 62% year over year; full-year earnings guidance was $5.10–$5.60. These company-defined adjusted measures differ from GAAP results, so the labels matter.

Your watchlist this week

The five biggest absolute weekly moves across our 26-name watchlist follow. Verified news offers context; it does not establish why prices moved.

CashtagWeek %Why / verified context
$AEHR−21.05%Oct 7: about $6m in Sonoma follow-on AI processor orders; results now scheduled Nov 2.
$SHOP+12.85%Oct 6: next quarterly results scheduled Nov 3; no proven cause for the weekly gain.
$ASTS−12.81%Oct 5: TELUS confirmed a satellite-to-phone integration test; no direct negative catalyst verified.
$AMKR−12.32%Oct 5: results scheduled Oct 26; no direct negative catalyst verified.
$INTC−12.26%Oct 6: results scheduled Oct 29; no direct negative catalyst verified.

$AEHR’s release matters for calendar accuracy: this was an orders-and-scheduling week, not an earnings report. Its fiscal-year change puts the next results on November 2 after the close. A large price decline can coexist with positive order news.

For wheel sellers

A lower VIX describes the index’s expected volatility, not the risk of each stock. This week’s double-digit watchlist moves show why a cash-secured put’s premium cannot erase assignment losses. CPI, earnings dates and the cash needed to accept shares remain separate parts of the same risk review.

Data note: equity and sector changes compare October 2 and 9 regular-session closes from delayed Yahoo data, excluding dividends. VIX and yield are vendor marks; the yield is not the Treasury par curve. Commodities are provisional; uncertain stock catalysts are flagged.
