$AEHR's 28% drop shows the risk behind the Dow's gain

The Dow gained 0.67%, but the Nasdaq lost 4.48% and five watchlist stocks fell over 20%. Higher volatility meets $TSLA and $META earnings next week.

What you need to know

• The Dow rose while growth shares fell sharply; index strength gave an incomplete picture. • September inflation accelerated, even as the ten-year Treasury yield fell; lower yields did not rescue technology. • $TSLA and $META report next week; earnings can move individual stocks far more than the broad market.

This recap covers October 12–16. Weekly price changes compare October 16 closing marks with October 9, excluding dividends. Data was retrieved early Saturday, October 17; this is a delayed Friday recap.

The week in 5 points

  • The S&P 500 lost 1.95% and the Nasdaq Composite fell 4.48%. The separate Nasdaq-100 dropped 5.49%, while the Dow gained 0.67%.
  • Small caps also struggled: the Russell 2000 declined 3.05%. The selling extended beyond the largest technology companies.
  • Consumer staples led the eleven sector funds reviewed. $XLP gained 5.02%, while technology fund $XLK lost 7.70%.
  • The $VIX traded between 14.98 and 22.31 and finished at 19.99. These are daily-series intraday extremes, not a range of closing values.
  • All five largest absolute movers in the 26-stock watchlist fell more than 20%. A richer option premium can accompany a much larger loss in the underlying shares.

Inflation rose while Treasury yields fell

September consumer prices rose 0.6% from August and 3.7% from a year earlier. Core prices, excluding food and energy, increased 0.3% monthly and 2.6% annually. Gasoline rose 9.1% in the month and explained more than half of the headline increase.

Producer prices reinforced the pressure: final demand rose 1.3% monthly and 6.3% annually. Retail sales increased 0.8% in September, a dollar measure that includes price changes. August sales growth was revised to 1.3% from 1.1%; stronger nominal spending does not establish stronger sales volumes.

Meanwhile, the official Treasury ten-year par yield fell from 5.24% to 5.09%, a 15-basis-point decline. One basis point is 0.01 percentage point. Those are Treasury curve observations, separate from the slightly different traded-yield quote in market feeds. Initial jobless claims were 199,000 for the week ended October 10. September industrial production rose 0.7%, with manufacturing up 0.3%. The Beige Book described persistent price pressure using contacts gathered by October 5.

Defensive sectors held up as technology retreated

Seven of eleven sector funds gained, even though three of the four broad indexes above fell. That split matters for wheel sellers: owning several tickers can still leave a portfolio concentrated in the same growth theme. Sector returns below use fund prices, not dividend-reinvested index returns.

Yahoo’s daily series put WTI at $101.41 a barrel, up 10.41% for the week; gold at $4,181.10 an ounce, down 0.83%; and the dollar index at 101.84, down 0.36%. These are vendor series marks, not verified exchange settlements. The same response’s separate last quotes were $99.02 for WTI at 16:59:58 ET on October 16, and 101.779 for the dollar index at 16:59:59 ET. Different marks must not be treated as identical closing prices.

Earnings showed demand without guaranteeing stock gains

Among notable third-quarter reports, $TSM posted revenue of US$46.72 billion, up 41.2% from a year earlier. $ASML reported sales of €11.662 billion and net income of €4.960 billion. $JPM reported GAAP diluted earnings of $5.57 per share; adjusted figures use a different basis. Operating results and stock returns answer different questions; these reports do not explain every watchlist decline.

Your watchlist this week

TickerWeekVerified context; causation limits
$AEHR−28.40%No company-specific driver verified this week; issuer schedules results for November 2.
$RKLB−25.47%An October 14 issuer filing moved the inaugural Neutron launch into 2027. This does not establish the sole cause of the decline.
$CRWV−25.21%No company-specific driver verified this week; the price move alone does not identify one.
$NBIS−25.15%No material issuer announcement verified as the reason for this week’s decline.
$CRDO−21.63%October 12–13 issuer releases covered optical standards and an $AMD demonstration; no verified link to the selloff.

These are the largest absolute weekly changes across all 26 watchlist names. A nearby announcement alone cannot prove why investors sold.

For wheel sellers

Higher volatility can raise quoted premiums, but it also signals larger expected price moves. A cash-secured put still carries downside risk toward zero, and a covered call limits upside without removing share losses. Earnings inside an option’s life add gap risk that a modest strike cushion may not absorb.

Next week puts company results back in focus

The next FOMC meeting is October 27–28. Its policy communication blackout runs October 17–29, limiting public policy commentary. The current 3.75–4.00% target followed September’s increase, not a new decision this week. Calendar times below are Eastern; releases and calls are separate events.
