$META's 9% weekly drop shows why revenue growth isn't enough

$META lost 9.40% while the S&P 500 fell just 0.47%. Earnings risk stays central as the Fed, GDP and PCE share next week’s calendar.

What you need to know

• The S&P 500 lost 0.47%, but small caps gained 2.00%; returns varied sharply across the market. • $META fell 9.40% despite revenue growth; earnings figures need context before they inform an options trade. • The Fed decides Wednesday, followed by GDP and PCE Thursday; next week packs several risks into short expiries.

The week in 5 points

  • The early rally faded. The S&P 500 closed Wednesday at 7,757.17, then finished below the previous Friday.
  • Energy and health care led the sector ETFs. Communication services lagged; holding several growth names can still leave exposure to a common theme.
  • The ten-year Treasury yield fell nine basis points. Lower bond yields did not prevent losses in several AI-linked shares.
  • Housing starts softened on an uncertain estimate, while new unemployment claims stayed low. The economy gave a mixed signal.
  • Results remained a stock-specific test. Next week combines major technology earnings with a Fed decision and fresh inflation data.

A small index loss hid a much rougher watchlist

The week of October 19–23 ended with the Nasdaq Composite down 0.71% and the Dow up 0.41%. The Nasdaq-100, a separate index, lost 0.79%. The Russell 2000 gained 2.00%, showing that smaller companies followed a different path.

The S&P 500 rose through Wednesday before two declines erased those gains. The chart shows why a weekly percentage can miss the journey. For short options, that journey matters: a strike can come under pressure before an apparently modest weekly finish.

Among the 11 sector ETFs, energy led: $XLE gained 1.60%, followed by health care’s $XLV at 1.45%. Communication services’ $XLC fell 4.36%, while industrials’ $XLI lost 1.87%. These are ETF price returns, excluding distributions, rather than sector-index total returns.

Lower yields did not remove inflation risk

The official ten-year Treasury par yield fell from 5.09% to 5.00%. That is a nine-basis-point decline, using the same Treasury series at both endpoints. The Fed’s latest decision remains September’s quarter-point increase to a 3.75%–4.00% target range; there was no decision this week.

Thursday’s initial unemployment claims were 194,000, down 6,000 from a revised prior week. September housing starts were estimated at a 1.221 million annual pace, down 5.2% monthly. The confidence interval for the monthly change includes zero, so the direction is uncertain.

Michigan’s final October sentiment reading was 48.0 versus September’s 48.1. Year-ahead inflation expectations edged up to 4.7% from 4.6%; these are household expectations, not measured inflation. Delayed vendor daily marks put WTI futures at $103.26 per barrel, up 1.82% for the week, gold futures at $4,010.80 per ounce, down 4.07%, and the dollar index at 101.774, down 0.06%.

Revenue growth did not guarantee a positive share return

Meta ($META) reported quarterly revenue of $64.601 billion, up 26%. Reported diluted earnings were $3.83 per share, including a $9.89 billion legal-settlement charge. Its 2026 capital-spending outlook was $135–145 billion. Revenue, exceptional charges and spending plans tell different parts of the story.

Bloom Energy ($BE) reported $1,235.8 million of revenue, up 138.1%, and raised full-year revenue guidance to $4.4–4.6 billion. Yet its shares lost 12.66% over the week. That comparison is a reminder that published business growth and a weekly stock return need not move together.

Your watchlist this week

CashtagWeek %Why it matters
$CRDO−13.21%No same-week issuer catalyst verified; earlier product news does not establish the cause of this decline.
$BE−12.66%Record quarterly revenue and raised guidance; the weekly stock return remained negative.
$CRWV−11.65%Launched a Zero Trust AI framework October 21; no verified causal link to the weekly fall.
$META−9.40%Revenue rose 26%; legal charges and substantial AI investment complicate the earnings picture.
$AEHR−8.73%Annual-meeting votes disclosed October 20; no operating catalyst verified for the decline.
Five largest absolute moves among all 26 watchlist names; October 16 to October 23 Yahoo daily close fields.

These five moves are rankings, not five proven explanations. Company announcements provide context; they do not establish the sole cause of each return. Even names connected to the same AI spending theme can face different financing, customer and execution risks.

For wheel sellers

A $VIX close of 19.45 describes broad S&P 500 volatility expectations, not the risk of one company. A short put still carries the obligation to buy shares, and a covered call still leaves share-price downside. Earnings and macro releases can produce gaps larger than the premium collected; individual option-chain pricing was not verified for this recap.

Next week brings the Fed, inflation and more earnings

The FOMC meets October 27–28, during a communications blackout running October 17–29. The confirmed decision and press conference are Wednesday afternoon. Crucially, BEA schedules both the advance third-quarter GDP report and September PCE inflation for Thursday morning, not Friday. Times below are Eastern and schedules can change.

Data notes: prices are delayed snapshots retrieved after the close. The preliminary Russell mark is corroborated by Cboe delayed quotes; its daily-history file had not yet included Friday. Commodity and dollar figures use consistent vendor daily fields, not independently verified exchange settlements or fixed-contract, roll-adjusted returns. The $VIX range combines Cboe daily history with Friday’s delayed quote. For $BE, Yahoo’s $193.30 differs from Nasdaq’s $193.0902; the consistent Yahoo series is retained and the ranking is unchanged.
