At 4:10 a.m. ET on August 31, 2026, the premarket message was caution rather than panic. U.S. equity futures were mixed, October WTI crude was up 2.40%, and the dollar was modestly firmer than its prior close. The common thread was a renewed inflation-risk debate: weekend fighting put the Strait of Hormuz back in focus just as Federal Reserve Chair Kevin Warsh emphasized that inflation remains above target.

Top line

Oil is the transmission channel to watch. If the move stays contained, the mixed index-futures tape may remain a rotation story; a broader energy surge would make the inflation-and-rates problem harder for growth stocks.

Asia was uneven rather than uniformly risk-off. Shanghai rose 0.86%, while the Nikkei 225 slipped 0.14%. In early European trade, Euro Stoxx 50 futures were down 0.29%. That dispersion matters: it points to selective de-risking and month-end positioning, not yet a synchronized global equity shock.

The inflation-sensitive cross-assets carried the cleaner signal. October WTI traded at $85.40, up 2.40%; December gold was down 0.73% at $4,496.80; and the U.S. Dollar Index was 99.515, up 0.19%. Friday's completed-session baselines were calm: Cboe's VIX closed August 28 at 14.43, while Treasury's official two-year and ten-year yields finished at 4.34% and 4.73%. Monday's opening test is whether oil pulls those rates and volatility measures higher.

Why the Strait matters

CNBC reported that U.S. forces struck two Iranian launchers on Larak Island after CENTCOM said Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps forces were preparing rockets carrying sea mines for the Strait of Hormuz. The immediate market effect was concentrated in crude, but shipping, insurance and inflation expectations are the second-round channels.

The Fed signal: hawkish, but not a promise

In his August 28 Jackson Hole speech, Warsh said twelve-month PCE inflation was 3.7% and six-month PCE inflation was running at 4.1%, while unemployment stood at 4.1%. He argued that the Fed's predominant focus should be prices and reaffirmed the 2% PCE target. He also rejected routine forward guidance and said the institution should be committed to a discipline, not to a predetermined decision.

That distinction is essential. The speech raises the hurdle for dismissing hot inflation data, but it does not guarantee a September rate move. A CNBC analyst roundup described the message as unexpectedly hawkish, while also carrying a dissenting view that weak labour data could still argue against a hike. For markets, the practical read is greater sensitivity to each inflation and employment release, not certainty about the next meeting.

Today's calendar and the next data test

The official BLS, BEA and Census schedules list no major federal economic release for Monday, August 31. The next cluster arrives Tuesday, September 1 at 10:00 a.m. ET: BLS is due to publish July job openings and labour turnover, and Census is due to publish July construction spending. With no comparable federal release today, oil headlines, Treasury trading and cash-open breadth may set the tone.

OpenAI said it intends to wind down its contract supplying models to Cursor after Cursor's acquisition by SpaceX, proposing November 12, 2026 as the cutoff. CNBC reported that Cursor CEO Michael Truell said OpenAI models account for about 5% of user traffic. That makes the item a real supplier-transition issue, but not an immediate shutdown: the date is more than two months away, the parties were still discussing the decision, and the disclosed traffic share limits the direct operating read-through.

What to watch today

  • Oil follow-through: whether October WTI holds the 2.40% advance or accelerates on new Strait of Hormuz headlines.
  • Rates transmission: whether the August 28 two-year and ten-year Treasury baselines of 4.34% and 4.73% move higher after the Warsh speech.
  • Breadth at 9:30 a.m. ET: whether the mixed futures tape broadens into defensive selling or remains a sector rotation.
  • $SPCX event risk: any negotiated change to OpenAI's proposed November 12, 2026 Cursor cutoff or evidence that the 5% traffic share changes.
