$LITE’s 36% weekly drop shows the risk in a stock takeover

$LITE fell 35.94% as stocks slid and hiring stayed firm. Stock-based deal terms and next week’s inflation calendar matter more than an eye-catching option premium.

What you need to know

• The S&P 500 lost 2.68% despite Friday’s bounce; the week’s headline hides much larger daily swings. • $LITE fell 35.94% after a stock-based takeover agreement; the buyer’s share price still matters. • October added 165,000 jobs; next week’s inflation releases keep the interest-rate question open.

The week in 5 points

  • The Nasdaq 100 lost 4.91%, a steeper decline than the broader Nasdaq Composite. Large growth stocks remained a pressure point.
  • Democratic election victories raised concerns about tighter oversight of AI infrastructure, Reuters reported Friday morning. Those are market concerns, not enacted restrictions.
  • The $VIX traded between 16.57 and 28.36. Friday’s 25.64 reading left expected stock-market swings above last week’s level.
  • The ten-year Treasury yield fell from 4.94% to 4.86%. Lower bond yields did not prevent a weekly equity loss.
  • A signed $MRVL–$LITE agreement replaced last week’s takeover reports. A fixed share ratio still leaves investors exposed to changing share prices.

Friday’s bounce left a bruising week behind

The S&P 500 ended at 7,376.86, down from 7,580.07 a week earlier. Its Wednesday rally and Thursday reversal show why a weekly percentage cannot describe the path. The Nasdaq Composite finished at 24,579.42; the Nasdaq 100 at 26,989.99.

A weekly loss with a sharp round trip

S&P 500 daily closes; October 30 is the prior-week baseline.

Hiring stayed firm while the economy kept expanding

October payrolls rose by 165,000, unemployment slipped to 4.1%, and average hourly earnings rose 0.4% from September. August and September job gains were revised up by a combined 84,000. That is a stronger hiring picture than the stock-market selloff alone suggests.

ISM’s manufacturing index rose to 55.5 from 54.5; its services index eased to 54.5 from 54.9. Both remained above 50, the dividing line between expansion and contraction. For premium sellers, solid activity and firm wages mean falling stock prices do not automatically bring easier monetary policy.

Delayed Friday vendor references put December WTI at $90.37 a barrel, down 13.21% from the prior Friday’s daily reference. December gold stood at $4,080.80 an ounce, up 4.67%, while the dollar index reached 102.321, up 0.43%. These are rolling vendor-series comparisons, not independently verified exchange settlements.

A stock takeover does not create a fixed cash floor

On Monday, Marvell ($MRVL) agreed to buy Lumentum ($LITE). Each Lumentum common share would receive 4.500 Marvell common shares, subject to the agreement’s conditions. The companies expect closing in the first half of 2028, with shareholder and regulatory approvals still required.

The announcement’s approximately $1,132 per-share value used a historical stock-price reference. It is not a promised cash payment. If the buyer’s stock falls, the market value of the shares offered falls too; completion risk remains separate. That distinction matters when assessing puts on either company.

Your watchlist this week

These were the five largest absolute weekly moves across the 27-name watchlist; all five were declines. The news column provides verified context. It does not claim that one announcement explains an entire week’s return.

CashtagWeek %Why
$LITE-35.94%Signed a stock-based takeover agreement with $MRVL; the offer value moves with the buyer’s shares.
$MRVL-28.11%Agreed to acquire $LITE using a fixed share ratio, adding merger and approval uncertainty.
$MU-22.01%Fell during the chip selloff; a company-specific explanation for the whole weekly drop was not verified.
$ASTS-21.09%Announced its Blacklift rocket project Friday, targeting late 2028; November 9 results remain ahead.
$CRDO-20.19%Announced optical telemetry work with Oracle; no causal link to the weekly decline was established.

Earnings still showed growth: Apple ($AAPL) reported $114.5 billion in quarterly revenue, up 12% from a year earlier. Shopify ($SHOP) reported 32% revenue growth and a 22% free-cash-flow margin. Strong operating numbers and a rising share price are different outcomes, especially during a broad repricing of growth stocks.

For wheel sellers

A higher $VIX can accompany richer option premiums, but it does not measure any individual stock’s option price. A cash-secured put still carries share-price losses below breakeven, and a stock-based merger adds another moving part. Earnings and inflation dates belong in the same risk review; no individual option chain or trade entry was verified here.

Next week puts inflation beside another earnings round

All times below are Eastern Standard Time, UTC−5. Earnings entries show confirmed calls or events, not assumed release times. The BLS calendar currently places October CPI on Tuesday and PPI on Friday; schedules can change. The next FOMC meeting is December 8–9.

Price returns compare October 30 and November 6 closes and exclude dividends. Commodity and dollar references were timestamped around 16:56 ET Friday and may update later. The official $VIX historical file had not yet added Friday; its delayed quote supplied Friday’s provisional reading, and Friday did not change the week’s range.
