What happened: a higher outlook, not a clean profit rebound
UPS raised its full-year outlook on October 27 after reporting third-quarter revenue of US$22.9 billion, up 6.7%. The market rewarded the update, but the details are more mixed than the headline: pricing and business mix helped sales while consolidated operating profit remained below last year. All dollar amounts here are U.S. dollars. [1]
At 14:06:57 Eastern on October 27, Yahoo Finance’s feed showed UPS at $105.245, versus the October 26 close of $100.32: a $4.925 increase, or 4.91%. Cumulative volume was 6,023,070 shares, already 1.33 times the 4,532,970-share average for the preceding 20 completed sessions. Intraday volume is incomplete; this is a dated snapshot, not a live quote. [3]
For the quarter ended September 30, GAAP operating profit was $1.744 billion and diluted earnings were $1.37 per share. Adjusted operating profit was $2.054 billion and adjusted EPS was $1.69. The adjustments included transformation costs, a goodwill impairment and asset-sale gains; adjusted figures supplement rather than replace the accounting results. [1]
| 2026 measure | July outlook | October outlook |
|---|---|---|
| Revenue | $91.2B | $92.6B |
| Adjusted operating profit | $8.65B | $8.75B |
| Adjusted diluted EPS | $7.22 | $7.28 |
The sales forecast increased by $1.4 billion, or 1.54%, from July’s outlook. For the fourth quarter alone, UPS now expects approximately $25.7 billion in revenue and $3.3 billion in adjusted operating profit. The full-year adjusted free-cash-flow target is about $6.1 billion. These are management forecasts, not guaranteed holiday-season outcomes. [1,2]
UPS: 25 completed sessions and today’s snapshot
Daily closes, September 22–October 26; final point is October 27 at 14:06:57 ET, not a closing price. [3]
Source: Yahoo Finance daily chart; retrieved October 27, 2026. Final intraday quote: 14:06:57 ET. [3]
Why it happened: price and mix, not a package-volume boom
- Domestic pricing: U.S. revenue rose 4.5% to $14.865 billion, with revenue per piece up 6.1%. Average daily domestic package volume was 15.621 million versus 16.150 million a year earlier, a calculated 3.28% decline. Revenue growth is not the same as shipping more packages. [1]
- International and logistics: international revenue increased 7.1% to $5.007 billion. Supply Chain Solutions revenue rose 18.2% to $2.981 billion, helped by forwarding and logistics, including healthcare. [1]
- Network changes: management attributes progress partly to greater efficiency. UPS reports approximately $1.8 billion of program benefits in the first nine months, while expecting nearly $3 billion for the full year. Benefits still come with restructuring costs. [1]
The sector backdrop was supportive too. FedEx traded at $306.61, up 2.01%, at 14:07:00 ET; transport ETF IYT was $81.71, up 1.25%, at 14:05:23 ET. UPS outperformed those snapshots, consistent with a company-specific catalyst, but relative moves cannot prove what caused every purchase. The quotes are not perfectly synchronized. [3–5]
The comparison needs a second look
Adjusted operating margin fell to 9.0% from 10.0%, and adjusted operating profit declined 3.66%. Supply Chain Solutions adjusted profit fell to $274 million from $536 million, but last year included a $330 million pre-tax sale-leaseback gain. That unusual comparison should not be mistaken for a clean measure of underlying deterioration. [1]
- Holiday demand or pricing can miss the forecasts; sales growth did not prevent lower adjusted margins. [1]
- UPS identifies tariffs, fuel costs and competition among its business risks. [1]
- Price gaps and assignment can overwhelm an option credit. A later covered call does not remove the shares’ downside. [9,10]
A higher sales outlook is not the same thing as higher profit on every package.
What it means for option sellers
OptionCharts’ October 27 snapshot, retrieved at 14:09:35 ET, showed 30-day implied volatility of 29.01% and IV rank of 30.56%. Its options data were 15-minute delayed at the time of writing. These provider estimates are separate from the stock snapshot; they are not a particular contract’s IV or a probability of profit. Check live prices before trading. [6]
The earnings release is now behind the stock, but selling premium still means accepting downside or surrendering upside. A cash-secured put can require buying shares at the strike even when the market price is much lower; the premium reduces effective cost, not the assignment price. A covered call requires the corresponding shares and caps their upside. The wheel changes the form of exposure; it does not erase a bad business outcome. [9,10]
Illustration, not a quoted trade
A hypothetical $100 put collecting an assumed $1 per share would generate $100 gross for a standard 100-share contract against a $10,000 purchase obligation. Breakeven would be $99; maximum loss if the shares became worthless would be $9,900 before fees. A hypothetical $110 covered call could require selling 100 shares at $110. Neither strike, premium nor expiry is a recommendation or a verified executable quote. [9,10]
What to watch next
- October 28: the Fed decision follows the October 27–28 meeting. September 16’s statement set a 3.75%–4.00% target range. Financing costs and economic demand matter to a cyclical shipper; tomorrow’s rate outcome is unknown. [7,8]
- October 30 and November 20: listed UPS option expirations make useful calendar checkpoints, not suggested holding periods. The former still includes the Fed event; both retain market and company-news risk. [6]
- Fourth-quarter delivery: compare subsequent updates with the $25.7 billion revenue and $3.3 billion adjusted operating-profit outlook. The October 27 earnings release does not supply the next quarterly reporting date, so none is treated here as confirmed. [1]
Research checklist, not a trade plan
- Before a hypothetical sale, refresh the actual contract’s spread, open interest and earnings calendar. [9,10]
- Test whether the share-purchase obligation remains acceptable after a sharp fall. A put premium is not a floor under the stock. [9]
- Do not treat a roll as a guaranteed repair. A stop or planned exit cannot ensure a fill through a price gap. [9,10]
