Amkor Technology’s latest results show why an AI-linked business can improve profits without delivering fast sales growth. The chip-packaging and testing company reported third-quarter revenue of $1.991 billion and diluted earnings of $0.76 on October 26, for the period ended September 30, 2026. Its fourth-quarter revenue forecast is lower at the midpoint than the quarter just reported. The question for option sellers is whether stronger margins offset a softer near-term sales picture.1
The stock: separate the selloff from the earnings response
AMKR closed Monday, October 26, at US$36.81, down $2.49, or 6.34%, from Friday’s $39.30. Yahoo Finance’s quote page reported Monday volume of 21,275,218 shares. That decline came before the after-close results; it should not be described as a reaction to numbers that had not yet been released.5
At 9:10:48 a.m. Eastern on October 27, Yahoo displayed a premarket price of $38.24, up $1.43, or 3.88%, from Monday’s close. This is a dated vendor snapshot, not a live entry price or proof of how the full session will finish. All dollar amounts below are U.S. dollars.5
Better profitability, but not a clean sweep against guidance
Quarterly sales were barely above the year-earlier $1.987 billion: approximately 0.2% growth using the company’s rounded figures. They rose 4.9% from the second quarter’s $1.898 billion. Net income attributable to Amkor increased to $191 million from $127 million a year earlier, while diluted EPS increased from $0.51 to $0.76.1
Gross margin reached 18.3%, versus 14.3% a year earlier and 16.8% in the second quarter: improvements of 4.0 and 1.5 percentage points, respectively. Operating income rose to $225 million from $159 million a year earlier; operating margin improved to 11.3% from 8.0%. More profit from almost unchanged annual sales is the important operating improvement.1
However, July’s guidance had called for third-quarter sales of $1.95 billion–$2.05 billion, gross margin of 18.5%–19.5% and EPS of $0.72–$0.82. Revenue and EPS landed inside those ranges, but gross margin missed the bottom by 0.2 percentage point. A year-over-year recovery is not the same as exceeding management’s own expectations.12
For the fourth quarter, management projects sales of $1.9 billion–$2.0 billion, gross margin of 18%–19%, net income of $160 million–$185 million and diluted EPS of $0.65–$0.75. The $1.95 billion sales midpoint is about 2.1% below Q3; the $0.70 EPS midpoint is below Q3’s $0.76. These are forecasts, not achieved results.1
Full-year 2026 capital expenditure is now approximately $2.5 billion, versus July’s $2.5 billion–$3.0 billion range. That places the plan at the old range’s low end rather than eliminating the investment burden. At September 30, cash and short-term investments totaled $2.4 billion against total debt of $2.5 billion.12
The drivers: computing strength meets communications friction
Amkor’s presentation reports computing revenue up 25% sequentially and communications down 8%. It identifies a system-in-package manufacturing migration to Vietnam, constrained materials and changes in customer build patterns in communications. Computing and automotive/industrial each reached record quarterly revenue. This mix helps explain why the headline sales number hides sharply different demand conditions.3
The longer-term AI opportunity is tangible but should not be booked as current sales. On October 21, Amkor announced a new $1.3 billion NVIDIA capacity agreement in South Korea, bringing the companies’ multi-year Arizona and South Korea agreements to $3 billion. The announcement describes prepayments supporting capacity expansion; it does not make those commitments equivalent to Q3 revenue.4
The peer comparison also matters. ASE Technology’s U.S.-listed shares, ASX, closed Monday at $39.91, up 3.15%, while AMKR fell. That divergence cautions against blaming every move on a single semiconductor-sector trade. Amkor’s own sales mix, margin delivery and spending commitments remain essential to the analysis.6
The wheel angle: income is not protection from repricing
A wheel strategy typically links cash-secured put selling with covered calls if shares are assigned. After an earnings release, implied volatility can fall, helping a short option when other factors are unchanged. But a further stock decline can outweigh that benefit. Current AMKR implied volatility and IV rank were not independently established in this research; the public OptionCharts overview did not expose those values. No premium, delta or probability estimate is presented.91011
For education only, consider a hypothetical $35 cash-secured put on a standard 100-share contract: the strike obligation is $3,500 before premium and fees. Assignment means buying shares at $35 even if the market is much lower. A hypothetical $40 covered call against 100 owned shares would cap the sale price at $40 if assigned, while leaving substantial stock downside. These are examples of payoff mechanics, not verified available contracts, quoted premiums or suggested trades.910
Earnings risk has changed, not disappeared: the October 26 release is now past, but this report does not establish the next company earnings date or an expiry safely outside it. The Federal Reserve’s October 27–28 meeting is another near-term event. Its September 16 statement raised the federal-funds target range by a quarter percentage point to 3.75%–4.00%; tomorrow’s decision is not known.78
Next checkpoints: October 28 and November 30–December 3
October 28 brings the second day of the Fed meeting. For Amkor, the next operational test is whether Q4 sales and margins land within the newly published ranges, not whether an AI headline sounds encouraging. The company also says it will exhibit at NVIDIA GTC Washington, D.C., November 30–December 3. That is a dated opportunity for updates, not a promised order announcement or share-price catalyst.147
