Cadence's new results give the chip-design software story a concrete test: faster sales and a higher outlook, but lower margins. In its October 26 third-quarter release, Cadence reported US$1.633 billion of revenue, up 22% year over year, and raised its 2026 revenue-growth outlook to 21%. For Tuesday, October 27, the question is how much of that improvement survives in earnings quality and option prices—not whether every AI announcement guarantees growth. 1
The numbers: growth improved, margins did not
CDNS closed Monday, October 26 at US$322.17, up US$5.68, or 1.79%, from Friday's US$316.49. Yahoo Finance's completed daily bar records 4,490,300 shares and a US$315.35–331.65 range. These are dated regular-session figures, not Tuesday's live quote or a measurement of the full earnings reaction. Yahoo's separate quote snapshot carries a different volume count; this article consistently uses its daily-series volume. 4
Revenue rose from US$1.339 billion a year earlier. Recurring revenue increased 18%, while backlog reached a record US$8.2 billion. Cadence identified US$4.2 billion of revenue expected within the next 12 months from remaining performance obligations. That distinction matters: the entire backlog is not next year's sales, and neither backlog nor guidance is cash already received. 1
The caution sits below the sales line. GAAP operating margin fell to 26.2% from 31.8%, a 5.6-percentage-point decline. Non-GAAP operating margin fell to 44.1% from 47.6%. GAAP diluted earnings stayed at US$1.05 a share, while non-GAAP diluted earnings rose to US$2.11 from US$1.93. The adjusted improvement should not be confused with growth in GAAP earnings per share. 1
Full-year revenue guidance is now US$6.387–6.417 billion, versus US$6.26–6.34 billion in the July 27 outlook. The midpoint rises by US$102 million, to US$6.402 billion. Non-GAAP EPS guidance is US$8.37–8.43, versus July's US$8.05–8.15. Its midpoint increases 3.70%, to US$8.40. Cadence also repurchased US$400 million of shares during the quarter and authorized another US$2.5 billion; authorization is not completed buying. 1 2
Why it happened: design demand, not just an AI label
Management linked demand to AI-driven designs, but the supporting detail is broader. Core electronic design automation revenue grew 20%, intellectual-property revenue 24%, and system design and analysis revenue 30%. These businesses provide tools and reusable design technology used to develop chips and systems. Their growth supports the operating explanation; it does not establish which individual announcement caused Monday's stock move. 1
Cadence also introduced its Maestro AI model portfolio on October 26. The company describes specialized models working with its engineering tools and AI agents, including collaboration with Nvidia. Deployment can be in cloud environments or on customer-controlled premises. The first models are available to selected early-access customers in the fourth quarter of 2026—not a claim of universal availability or a separately quantified revenue contribution. 3
For sector context, Synopsys closed Monday at US$454.33, up 5.62% from Friday's US$430.14; Nvidia finished at US$216.00, up 2.39% from US$210.96. Cadence was therefore not the only design-and-AI-linked name rising. These comparisons describe the same regular session, not proof that Cadence's later results drove its peers. 5 6
For option sellers: an overnight screen is not an entry quote
OptionCharts' overview labeled October 27, captured at 6:19 a.m. ET, displayed 30-day implied volatility of 50.99% and IV rank of 72.42%. The site labeled options prices 15-minute delayed at the time of writing. This pre-open overview does not establish a fresh, executable post-results contract price or prove that earnings volatility has already fallen. IV rank is not a probability of profit. Check live prices before trading. 7
For education, consider hypothetical US$310 puts and US$350 covered calls expiring October 30, a listed expiry. Against Monday's US$322.17 close, those strikes sit 3.78% below and 8.64% above the reference price. A standard 100-share put at US$310 requires US$31,000 for the full assignment payment before costs. These are illustrations, not screened recommendations: no premium, delta, expected return or probability of profit is asserted. 4 7 10 11
The wheel starts with an obligation, not guaranteed income. A put seller may have to buy shares above their market value; premium only partly offsets the damage. A covered-call seller keeps the stock's downside but gives up gains beyond the strike if assigned. Cadence's reported quarter is now known, but margin pressure, customer spending and new headlines can still change the value of shares received through assignment. 1 10 11
What to watch next: October 28, October 30 and early access
The Federal Reserve meets October 27–28, making October 28 the decision day. Its last checked statement, September 16, raised the federal-funds target range by a quarter percentage point to 3.75–4.00%. That is historical policy context, not a forecast of Wednesday's decision. A contract expiring October 30 includes that intervening macro event even though Cadence has already reported. 8 9
On October 27, watch how the regular market evaluates the higher outlook alongside weaker margins, and how option spreads and IV reset. October 30 is the educational examples' expiry. Through the fourth quarter, watch Maestro's selective early-access rollout and whether operating execution supports the outlook. The practical takeaway is to separate sales growth, adjusted earnings and premium income: none is a substitute for understanding the downside. 1 3 7
