What you need to know
- Yields kept climbing. The 10-year ended near 5.24% and the 30-year near 5.55%, both around their highest since the 2000s. That is the main weight on stocks.
- AI winners gave some back. $META fell 4.8% after a 13% week, and chip names slid, while $NVDA rose on a record $150 billion buyback.
- Insurance got pricier. The VIX jumped 8% to 16.07 ahead of JOLTS on Tuesday, PCE on Wednesday and payrolls on Friday.
Bond yields did the damage, not earnings
The S&P 500 fell 0.77% to 7,683.69, and the Nasdaq lost 0.92%. At the lows the S&P was down about 1%. The index is now roughly flat for September, though still up more than 12% for the year, CNBC noted.
The trigger was rates. The 10-year Treasury yield rose about 5.5 basis points to 5.24%, and the 2-year climbed almost 7 to 4.93%. Futures still lean toward another Fed hike in October, after this month's quarter-point increase.
Fed Governor Lisa Cook did not push back. She said AI could lower inflation over time, but not fast enough to stop today's price pressure from oil and the AI buildout. She added that the job market looks able to handle higher rates.
Oil swung on Iran headlines and gold slid 4%
Crude opened higher after Trump rejected Iran's Hormuz offer over the weekend. It fell back midday when CNN and Axios reported he was open to sanctions relief for real nuclear progress. It then firmed again on news that Saudi Arabia resumed exports through its east-west pipeline.
WTI ended up 0.95% at $93.29, and Brent traded near $105.88 late. Gold took the biggest hit, down 4.0% to $4,148.50. When bonds pay over 5%, a metal that pays nothing looks less attractive.
Defensives held up while AI and consumer names sold off
Only three SPDR sector funds finished green: health care, staples and energy. Communication services and consumer discretionary fell the most, dragged by $META and $TSLA. $BA dropped nearly 7% after the FAA said it won't certify the 737 Max 10 until it reviews a new software glitch.

Your watchlist
| Ticker | Move | Why |
|---|---|---|
| $BE | -8.95% to $262.87 | Profit-taking after a roughly 190% run this year and Friday's 8% jump on S&P 500 entry. Clean energy was weak too. |
| $CRDO | -8.67% to $192.67 | A Form 4 showed the co-founder and CTO sold shares through a family trust on Sept. 26. |
| $INTC | -5.67% to $116.03 | Profit-taking after a 28% month, as higher yields hit chip stocks. |
| $META | -4.79% to $715.62 | Launched Meta Enterprise Platform and hired MongoDB CEO CJ Desai to run it. $MDB fell about 20%. |
| $TSLA | -3.94% to $357.45 | JPMorgan cut its Q3 delivery estimate to 482,000 from 516,000; deliveries are due Friday. |
$SPCX slipped 2.16% even though Starship reached orbit for the first time and released 26 Starlink satellites. After the bell, Jefferies ($JEF) earned $1.08 a share on $2.22 billion of net revenue, with a record quarter in investment banking.
For wheel sellers
A VIX at 16 and 10-year yields above 5.2% mean both put premiums and cash yields are higher than last week. The catch is timing: JOLTS, PCE, $MU earnings and payrolls all land before Friday. Many premium sellers wait for the data or pick expiries past Oct. 2 instead of selling this week's puts into four catalysts.
What's next
| Time (ET) | Event | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Before open | Carnival ($CCL), CarMax ($KMX) earnings | Fuel costs and the health of the consumer |
| 10:00 | JOLTS job openings (Aug.), Conference Board consumer confidence | A cooler job market would ease hike bets |
| 12:40 | Fed Governor Barr on the economic outlook | He called more hikes likely last week |
| Wed 8:30 | PCE inflation (Aug.) | The Fed's preferred inflation gauge |
| Wed after close | Micron ($MU) earnings | The watchlist's biggest event for chip names |
| Fri 8:30 | September jobs report; $TSLA Q3 deliveries | The last big test before October's Fed meeting |
