Key takeaways
- Airbnb’s Q3 revenue rose 19% to USD 4.869 billion.
- Booking growth and a higher annual outlook accompanied a premarket rebound.
- An extra USD 12 billion buyback authorization is permission, not completed spending.
- Post-earnings option prices need a fresh check; a rally is not downside protection.

What changed overnight
Airbnb released its third-quarter results after the November 5 close, covering the quarter ended September 30, 2026. Revenue rose 19% to USD 4.869 billion, and diluted earnings increased to USD 3.16 per share from USD 2.21 a year earlier. Management raised its full-year growth and adjusted-margin outlook and authorized up to an additional USD 12 billion of share repurchases. Shareholder letter.
The market reaction reversed Thursday’s decline. ABNB closed November 5 at USD 170.13, down USD 6.24 or 3.54%; Yahoo’s November 6 snapshot at 06:04:47 EST showed USD 190.61, up USD 20.48 or 12.04% from that close. Its quote page reported 9,074,054 shares for November 5 versus a displayed average of 4,716,771, or 1.92 times average; this is not premarket turnover. These are dated observations, not live prices. More bookings, not just higher prices
The report offers a business explanation for the rebound: more activity, higher prices and better profitability arrived together. Nights and Seats Booked increased 16% to 155.0 million, while Gross Booking Value rose 21% to USD 27.7 billion. Average daily rate was about USD 179, up 4%, so price alone does not explain the booking-value increase. Results and operating metrics.
| Metric | Q3 2026 | Q3 2025 |
|---|---|---|
| Revenue | 4,869 | 4,095 |
| Nights and Seats Booked | 155.0 million | 133.6 million |
| Gross Booking Value | 27.7 billion | 22.9 billion |
| GAAP net income | 1,890 | 1,374 |
| Diluted EPS, USD | 3.16 | 2.21 |
| Adjusted EBITDA, non-GAAP | 2,509 | 2,051 |
| Free cash flow, non-GAAP | 1,426 | 1,349 |
The profit improvement still needs qualification. Net income benefited from a USD 135 million year-over-year reduction in the income-tax provision, while adjusted EBITDA excludes costs including stock-based compensation. Its reported margin reached 52%, but management expects the fourth-quarter adjusted margin to be slightly lower than a year earlier, partly because of marketing timing. Financial statements and outlook.
Airbnb is back in growth mode.
The travel read-through has limits
Expedia’s November 4 report provides a useful peer check: booked room nights rose 7%, gross bookings 11% and revenue 12%. That supports a broader demand backdrop, but Expedia’s mix and booking definitions differ from Airbnb’s, so the percentages are not a like-for-like market-share test. Airbnb also said first-time bookers grew 13% and customer-support cost per booking fell more than 17%, largely helped by its AI assistant; these remain company-reported drivers, not an independent measurement of AI revenue. ABNB: 40 regular-session closes

The macro backdrop is another risk channel, not proof of why ABNB rose. The November 5 preliminary BLS report showed third-quarter nonfarm business productivity up 3.6% and unit labor costs down 0.7%, both seasonally adjusted annualized quarterly rates. Those economy-wide figures do not measure travel demand, and the November 6 employment release was still ahead of this premarket snapshot. BLS productivity; release calendar.
What it means for option sellers
Current post-earnings implied volatility and IV rank were not independently confirmed in the sources reviewed. Implied volatility reflects expected movement priced into options, not a forecast of direction; a lower reading can reduce option value even while the stock moves. Yesterday’s premium would therefore be a poor substitute for a fresh option-chain check after earnings. OIC volatility guide.
For the wheel, the essential distinction is between receiving income and accepting ownership risk. A hypothetical USD 180 cash-secured put creates a purchase obligation below the dated premarket price; a hypothetical USD 200 covered call gives up upside above its strike while retaining stock downside. These are educational strike illustrations, not verified listed contracts, quoted premiums or recommendations. OIC cash-secured put; OIC covered call.
The main risk
A strong earnings report does not prevent another price gap. Falling implied volatility does not cancel a short put’s stock-price risk, and a covered call provides only limited downside cushioning.
Worked math — not a trade quote
Assume a standard hypothetical 100-share put at USD 180. Gross purchase cash is USD 18,000; if assigned and the shares are worth USD 150 at expiry, the loss is USD 3,000 before premium and fees. No premium, probability or return is assumed.
Risks and a review plan
- Demand: weaker travel spending, geopolitical disruption or execution problems could undermine the growth case.
- Profit quality: compare future GAAP profit and cash generation with adjusted margins; the tax benefit is not recurring operating growth.
- Review process: reassess current stock prices, option spreads, assignment obligations and the event calendar rather than treating a strike as sufficient compensation.
What to watch next
- November 6, 08:30 EST: October U.S. employment data are scheduled; the outcome was unknown at the quoted premarket time.
- November 10, 08:30 EST: October CPI is scheduled, another potential repricing event.
- Q4 2026: management guides revenue to USD 3.22–3.28 billion, up 16%–18%, including about two percentage points of currency benefit. The next earnings date remains unconfirmed.
For full-year 2026, Airbnb now expects high-teens revenue growth and an adjusted EBITDA margin of about 36%. The useful test is whether booking momentum becomes durable profit and cash, not whether a buyback authorization guarantees support for the shares. Company outlook; BLS dates.
