Key takeaways

  • Akamai projects faster company growth in 2027 and more than USD 7 billion in 2028 sales; neither is booked revenue.
  • Third-quarter cloud infrastructure grew 34%, but diluted profit fell and cash investment exceeded operating cash flow.
  • The quoted stock decline and volatility snapshot precede the earnings release, not a measured reaction to it.

The new outlook meets an immediate cash test

Akamai’s November 5 earnings release puts a much larger cloud business on the horizon: management projects 2027 Cloud Infrastructure Services revenue of USD 1.1 billion to USD 1.3 billion. It also forecasts total-company revenue growth of 17%–22% in 2027, adjusted for foreign exchange, and more than USD 7 billion of total revenue in 2028. These are company projections, not completed sales. Official results.

Before the release, AKAM traded at USD 78.88 at 15:53 ET, down USD 7.05, or 8.20%, from November 4’s USD 85.93 close. The company published results at 16:01 ET, so that earlier decline cannot be described as an earnings reaction. The Cboe prices were 15-minute delayed when retrieved around 16:09 ET; check live prices before trading. Dated Cboe snapshot.

Cboe recorded 7,162,616 shares traded at that snapshot, about 1.54 times Yahoo Finance’s three-month daily average of 4,665,154. This compares a partial session with full-day averages, not turnover adjusted for the time of day. Volume baseline.

Growth is real; profit and cash tell a different story

For the quarter ended September 30, 2026, revenue was USD 1.122 billion, up 6% from a year earlier, or 7% adjusted for currency. Security revenue rose 9% to USD 622 million, Cloud Infrastructure Services rose 34% to USD 109 million, and delivery plus other cloud applications fell 3% to USD 391 million. The fast-growing infrastructure business still represented only about 9.7% of total quarterly sales. Segment tables.

GAAP diluted earnings fell 21% to USD 0.77 per share, while non-GAAP diluted earnings fell 5% to USD 1.77. Non-GAAP operating margin was 25%, down six percentage points year over year. The distinction matters: faster cloud demand has not yet translated into stronger year-over-year quarterly profitability. Profit measures.

Operating cash flow was USD 433.037 million, but cash purchases of property and equipment plus capitalized internal-use software cost USD 605.155 million. Subtracting the latter gives a USD 172.118 million shortfall before other investing and financing flows. This simple cash comparison is not Akamai’s official free-cash-flow measure. Why the cloud outlook is changing the discussion

On September 24, Akamai announced an USD 11.6 billion contractual commitment from Anthropic over seven years, with possible expansion of up to another USD 9 billion. It estimated roughly USD 5.5 billion of related capital expenditure, showing why a large contract value is not cash profit or one year’s revenue. Anthropic agreement.

  • Demand: management says more than USD 14 billion of multiyear cloud commitments were signed this year; timing and execution still matter.
  • Near-term test: Q4 sales guidance is USD 1.145–1.170 billion, with non-GAAP operating margin of 24%.
  • Sector context: Cloudflare and the Nasdaq-100 tracking QQQ were also lower in the nearby pre-release observations below. This is context, not proof of why investors sold AKAM.

The macro backdrop is separate from company execution. Today’s preliminary BLS report showed third-quarter nonfarm-business productivity up 3.6% and unit labor costs down 0.7%, both seasonally adjusted annualized quarterly rates. These economy-wide figures are not Akamai’s costs and cannot establish what caused its share-price move. BLS release.

The distinction
A multiyear sales commitment is not the same thing as cash available to shareholders.

What it means for option sellers

Cboe’s delayed snapshot showed 30-day implied volatility of 80.00%; a reliable current IV rank was not verified. This is pre-release context, not a claim about volatility after earnings. Option sellers need a refreshed chain because the new outlook may change both share prices and option-implied uncertainty. Cboe volatility data.

For the wheel, a cash-secured put can become an obligation to buy stock at the strike despite a further decline. A covered call retains stock downside while capping upside, which matters if the cloud outlook triggers a rebound. The next official earnings date after this report remains unconfirmed in the sources checked; no expiry is certified here as earnings-free. OIC put; OIC covered call.

Hypothetical math, not a trade quote

Assume a standard 100-share put with a USD 70 strike and a purely assumed USD 2 premium. Gross cash reserved is USD 7,000, credit is USD 200, and expiry breakeven is USD 68 per share before fees and taxes. A hypothetical USD 90 covered-call strike caps the shares’ sale price; these strikes and premium are educational, not verified live opportunities.

The main risk

Spending arrives before contract revenue. Delays, funding pressure or weaker margins could undermine the growth case, and option premium cannot prevent a substantial stock loss.

  • Risk check: distinguish signed commitments, recognized revenue and collected cash.
  • Review plan: reassess after material company updates and the dated macro releases below; do not assume assignment repairs a broken thesis.
  • Execution check: rebuild live quotes, spreads, liquidity and the event calendar before considering any contract. No bid, ask, delta or profit probability is asserted here.

What to watch next

  • November 6, 2026: the next regular trading session after the results; separate the earnings reaction from the pre-release snapshots.
  • November 6, 08:30 ET: October U.S. Employment Situation.
  • November 10, 08:30 ET: October U.S. CPI. Both macro releases can affect the broader market; company forecasts remain uncertain.

The employment and inflation dates come from the official BLS November calendar. Watch whether cloud growth improves margins and funds infrastructure. Official schedule.
