Cloudflare rebounds after hours as Q3 sales growth reaches 39%

NET rebounds after its Q3 report, but weaker cash margins temper 39% sales growth. Dated prices, Q4 guidance and the risks that matter for option sellers.

Key takeaways

  • Cloudflare’s Q3 revenue grew 39% to USD 782.5 million.
  • Q4 sales guidance is USD 845–846 million, not a guaranteed outcome.
  • Shares rebounded after hours following an 8.28% regular-session decline.
  • Cash margins and fresh option prices matter more than a large-looking premium.

What changed after the bell

Cloudflare reported third-quarter results on November 5 for the period ended September 30, 2026. Revenue reached USD 782.5 million, up 39% from a year earlier, while adjusted diluted earnings rose to USD 0.38 from USD 0.27. Its fourth-quarter forecast calls for USD 845–846 million of revenue and USD 0.43 of adjusted earnings per share. Those are management estimates, not booked results. Company release.

The stock’s two sessions tell different stories. NET closed at USD 244.51, down USD 22.07 or 8.28%; Yahoo’s November 5 after-hours snapshot at 19:28:34 EST showed USD 280.65, up USD 36.14 or 14.78% from that close. Regular-session volume was 8,290,356 shares versus a displayed average of 3,397,814, or 2.44 times average; after-hours turnover is not included in that comparison. These are dated observations, not live entry prices. Yahoo Finance.

Growth is stronger; the cash test is tougher

The report gives a concrete reason for the reversal: faster sales growth alongside a larger forward revenue base. Current remaining performance obligations grew 37% year over year, another reported demand indicator. Management linked the opportunity to its AI development platform and cybersecurity needs, but that explanation does not independently measure AI’s contribution to revenue. Results and outlook.

The quality check is less celebratory. GAAP gross margin fell 2.8 percentage points, and the GAAP net loss widened even as non-GAAP operating margin improved to 17.5% from 15.3%. Free cash flow increased in dollars, but its reported revenue margin slipped to 10% from 13%; stock-based compensation and related payroll taxes were USD 174.1 million. Adjusted profit should therefore not be confused with GAAP profit or cash left after investment. Financial statements and reconciliations.

A company rebound inside a weak sector

The regular-session backdrop was hostile: Fastly fell 26.88%, Akamai 9.41%, and the Nasdaq-100 tracker QQQ 6.49% in Yahoo’s November 5 close snapshots. Those moves provide peer and market context, not proof that every company faced the same business problem. Cloudflare’s after-hours gain must not be plotted as if it were a simultaneous regular-session return. Fastly data; Akamai data; QQQ data.

Macro data also matter for a growth stock’s valuation. The November 5 preliminary BLS release put third-quarter nonfarm business productivity growth at a seasonally adjusted annualized 3.6%, with unit labor costs down 0.7% on the same basis. Those are quarterly annualized rates, not year-over-year figures, and they do not establish why NET rebounded after earnings. BLS productivity release.

What it means for option sellers

Cboe’s delayed dataset retrieved November 5 at 19:29 EST reported 30-day implied volatility of 87.14%. Its stock last-trade field remained at 15:59:59, so this is not a verified post-release option chain; IV rank was not independently confirmed. The next earnings date after this report is also unconfirmed in the sources reviewed. A fresh regular-session chain is needed before treating any premium as available. Cboe snapshot.

For the wheel, assignment is the central question, not just premium income. A hypothetical USD 250 cash-secured put creates a purchase obligation below the dated after-hours price; a hypothetical USD 300 covered call exchanges some upside for premium while retaining share downside. These are educational strike illustrations, not verified listed contracts, quoted premiums or recommendations. Earnings repricing can change both the stock price and implied volatility before the next session. OIC cash-secured put; OIC covered call.

The main risk

A post-earnings rally does not remove downside risk. A lower implied-volatility reading can reduce option value while another stock-price gap hurts a short put; a covered call does not protect most of a shareholding’s decline.

Worked math — not a trade quote

Assume a standard hypothetical 100-share put at USD 250: gross purchase cash is USD 25,000. If assigned and the shares are worth USD 220 at expiry, the loss is USD 3,000 before premium and fees. No premium, probability or return is assumed here.

Risks and a review plan

  • Cash conversion: compare future free cash flow with revenue rather than relying only on adjusted earnings.
  • Execution: weaker growth or further gross-margin pressure would challenge the optimistic reading of this report.
  • Market risk: review fresh stock prices, option spreads and the event calendar at the next session; a strike alone says nothing about compensation for risk.

What to watch next

  • November 6, 08:30 EST: the BLS October employment report is scheduled before the next regular stock session.
  • November 10, 08:30 EST: October CPI is scheduled; neither release’s outcome is known.
  • Next company checkpoint: test delivery against the Q4 revenue range and USD 156–157 million non-GAAP operating-income outlook when results arrive; no next earnings date is independently confirmed.

The BLS calendar supplies the two macro dates, while Cloudflare’s release supplies the company targets. The useful takeaway is a distinction: demand accelerated, but cash margins weakened and the stock still faces a different price and volatility environment when options reopen.
