A bigger quarter, with a new margin hurdle
Arista Networks reported third-quarter results after the market closed on November 3. Revenue reached US$3.66 billion for the quarter ended September 30, up 58.5% from a year earlier and 20.5% from the previous quarter. That exceeded the company’s US$3.3 billion guidance by about 10.9%; this comparison is with management’s forecast, not an analyst consensus. [1,5]
The networking supplier also reported GAAP earnings of US$1.22 per diluted share and adjusted, or non-GAAP, earnings of US$1.20. These are different accounting measures, not interchangeable figures. Non-GAAP operating margin reached 49.1%, versus 48.6% a year earlier; GAAP operating margin was 44.9%. [1]
For the fourth quarter, management forecasts US$3.9 billion to US$4.0 billion of revenue and US$1.26 to US$1.30 of non-GAAP diluted earnings per share. The revenue midpoint implies roughly 7.9% sequential growth using rounded reported sales. The operating-margin guide is 48% to 49%: still substantial, but its 48.5% midpoint is 0.6 percentage points below Q3. [1]
The stock rose, but this is not a closing-price verdict
Cboe’s saved delayed observation showed ANET at US$180.25 against a US$169.91 previous close, a gain of US$10.34, or 6.09%. The underlying last-trade time was November 4 at 14:16:51 ET; the snapshot was retrieved at 14:35:15 ET. These were delayed observations, not executable live quotes. [2]
Volume in that snapshot was 12,715,128 shares, about 2.20 times the 5,785,417-share average for the prior 30 completed sessions calculated from Yahoo Finance daily bars. An incomplete session is being compared with full trading days, not with a time-of-day volume benchmark. The chart stops at November 3 to avoid treating today’s unfinished bar as a close. [2,3]

Why AI networking matters, and what it does not prove
Arista supplies the networks linking computing systems, rather than only the processors doing the calculations. Its release highlighted open Ethernet rack-scale architectures developed with partners including AMD, Broadcom, Meta and Microsoft. That helps explain why AI infrastructure demand matters to the business, without treating every partnership as a booked order. [1]
The sector was not moving in lockstep. Cisco’s separate Cboe observation showed US$103.30, up 0.32%, with a last-trade time of 14:11:30 ET. The two snapshots have different clocks and are not a synchronized peer study. Arista’s larger gain is consistent with a company-specific earnings reaction, but prices alone cannot prove investors’ motives. [2,4]

- Demand: watch whether strong sales become repeat deliveries, rather than assuming the latest growth rate lasts. [1]
- Margins: product mix and supply costs can matter even when revenue rises. Management explicitly flags supply, customer concentration and competition risks. [1]
- Accounting: Arista recast prior non-GAAP periods after changing its tax-adjustment methodology; use the comparable figures supplied in this release. [1]
What it means for option sellers
Cboe displayed 30-day implied volatility of 53.169%, down 9.924 percentage points. That is the market’s option-implied uncertainty measure, not a promised share-price move. A current IV rank was not independently established, so none is quoted. Falling IV can help an existing short option, all else equal, while reducing the premium available on a new sale. [2,8,9]
For the wheel, a put sale is a possible share purchase, not merely income collection. A covered call exchanges some upside for premium but does not remove downside in the shares. The November 3 earnings event has passed; the next earnings date was not confirmed in the reviewed company announcement. No expiry is certified here as free of earnings risk. [5,8,9]
Recorded prices, educational math only
The saved November 20 US$170 put showed bid US$4.20 and ask US$4.70 per share. For a standard 100-share contract, using the bid means US$420 gross credit against US$17,000 reserved cash, with a US$165.80 breakeven before fees. The same-expiry US$190 call showed US$4.75–5.45; a covered seller would cap share upside at the strike. These are examples, not entry instructions or promised fills. Check live prices before trading. [2,8,9]
A premium is not protection from a new gap
A stock can fall below a put’s breakeven before any planned adjustment. Customer concentration, supply constraints and intense competition remain risks in Arista’s own disclosure. Rolling does not erase an economic loss, and assignment can require the full share purchase. [1,8]
Faster sales growth does not turn a short put into a low-risk substitute for owning the business.
What to watch next
The macro backdrop still matters. The November 3 BLS report put September job openings at 7.5 million, little changed, with a 4.5% openings rate. That describes September’s labour market, not November hiring or a forecast of the next interest-rate decision. It is context for growth-sensitive shares, not a proven cause of ANET’s move. [6]
- November 6, 08:30 ET: October Employment Situation; November 10, 08:30 ET: October CPI, per the BLS calendar. Both precede the illustrative November 20 expiry. [7]
- December 1, 12:15–12:45 ET: Arista’s scheduled UBS conference appearance. Watch for commentary on demand and the margin outlook; an appearance does not guarantee new guidance. [5]
- Before considering a contract: refresh the company calendar, bid/ask and liquidity. Reassess whether assignment or capped upside remains acceptable after this price jump. [8,9]
