Uber’s bookings grow 20%, but driver shortages test the outlook

Uber reports US$59.819 billion in Q3 bookings and US$0.88 adjusted EPS. Driver supply, Q4 cash demands and dated options risks shape the next test.

More trips, but a harder supply problem

Uber released third-quarter results on November 4 for the three months ended September 30, 2026. Revenue reached US$14.766 billion, up 10% from a year earlier, while gross bookings—the value of activity across its platforms—grew 20% to US$59.819 billion. Trips rose 16% to 4.061 billion, with 215 million monthly active platform consumers. [1]

Nasdaq’s November 4 premarket snapshot at 9:24 a.m. ET showed US$67.13, up US$0.53, or 0.80%, from Tuesday’s US$66.60 close. This is a dated premarket observation, not a live entry price. Yahoo’s November 3 daily series records 21,191,800 shares: 1.30 times the preceding 20-session average of 16,263,830. That volume predates the earnings release. [3][4]

Why growth and reported revenue tell different stories

The encouraging part is that activity and operating profits kept expanding. Mobility gross bookings increased 18% in reported dollars to US$29.512 billion; Delivery rose 22% to US$28.539 billion. GAAP operating income increased 30% to US$1.447 billion, and adjusted diluted earnings rose 35% to US$0.88 per share. These are different measures—not interchangeable versions of cash profit. [1]

The constraint was matching riders with enough drivers. Management says elevated fuel prices and tighter international driver availability left Mobility growth 1–2 percentage points below its own expectations. Separately, a UK reporting-model change reduced total revenue growth by about eight percentage points: driver payments moved from cost of revenue to contra-revenue, without changing underlying economics. That accounting change is not the same problem as driver shortages. [2]

GAAP net income fell to US$512 million from US$6.626 billion. The comparison includes last year’s US$4.9 billion tax-valuation benefit and US$1.5 billion pre-tax investment-revaluation benefit, versus a US$476 million pre-tax revaluation loss this quarter. That helps explain why net income and operating income moved in opposite directions. Free cash flow was US$2.535 billion; management expects a roughly US$1.5 billion UK VAT-related cash payment in Q4. [1][2]

  • Rides: watch the cost of recruiting and retaining drivers, not just booking growth. [2]
  • Peer check: Lyft’s November 5 results can offer another view of ride-hailing conditions, not a guaranteed forecast for Uber. [6]

What it means for option sellers

Uber’s company earnings release has been published, but the archived snapshot below does not establish how options repriced afterward. The Cboe snapshot retrieved at 9:07 a.m. ET listed 30-day implied volatility at 43.878%, rounded to 43.88%. Its last-trade markers still pointed to November 3, so this is not a verified post-release IV reading. IV rank was not verified, and neither figure establishes that today’s premiums are attractive. [5]

For the wheel, assignment means owning the stock risk, not simply collecting income. A November 20 US$65 put or US$70 covered call can illustrate the obligations; neither is a recommendation or a quoted opportunity. A covered call caps upside and retains share-price downside. The cited releases do not confirm Uber’s next earnings date, so an expiry must not be assumed earnings-free. [10]

Educational arithmetic—not a market quote

Assume a standard 100-share US$65 put and a hypothetical US$1 premium per share. Gross credit is US$100 against US$6,500 at the strike; expiry breakeven is US$64 before fees. At US$60 at expiry, the net loss is US$400 before fees. The premium is assumed, not observed. [10]

  • A short put can be assigned before expiry; reserved cash is still exposed. [10]
  • A fresh bid/ask, spread and volatility check are needed before evaluating any real contract.
  • Lyft, jobs data and inflation can move the shares after Uber’s own release. [6][8]

The main risk

Driver-supply investment, acquisition integration and autonomous-vehicle spending can compete with cash returns. Q4 guidance is management’s expectation, not a promise; a premium does not protect against a large stock decline. [1][2][10]

Strong bookings do not remove the cost of finding enough drivers.

What to watch next

November 5 brings Lyft’s results after the close, with its call at 5 p.m. ET. Uber’s CFO is scheduled to speak at Morgan Stanley’s Barcelona conference on November 18 at 3 a.m. ET. The Q4 bookings range has a US$64.25 billion midpoint and the adjusted EPS range a US$0.97 midpoint—useful checkpoints for assessing subsequent updates. [1][6][9]

The macro backdrop is mixed, not an explanation for every Uber move. BLS reported 7.523 million preliminary, seasonally adjusted September job openings on November 3, describing them as little changed. October’s U.S. employment report is scheduled for November 6 and CPI for November 10, both at 8:30 a.m. ET. Neither future result is known. [7][8]
