Key takeaways
- McDonald’s shares gained 6.53% in the saved regular-session price snapshot.
- Quarterly earnings rose, although U.S. comparable sales slipped 0.2%.
- International growth and operating profit offer a better picture than U.S. sales alone.
- Lower option volatility and the dividend calendar still matter for the wheel.

Profit improved, but visits remain the test
McDonald’s reported third-quarter results on November 4 for the period ended September 30, 2026. Global comparable sales rose 1.5%, while U.S. comparable sales fell 0.2%. The company said fewer U.S. guest visits were largely offset by higher average checks: customers spending more per order is not the same as more customers coming through the door. [1,2]
International Operated Markets grew comparable sales 1.4%; International Developmental Licensed Markets grew 4.2%. Worldwide Systemwide sales rose 4% to more than US$38 billion, while consolidated revenue increased 1%. Those measures have different scopes: sales across the restaurant system should not be mistaken for revenue booked by the corporation. [1,2]
GAAP diluted earnings reached US$3.51 a share, up 10%. Excluding specified restructuring-related charges, adjusted diluted earnings were US$3.57, up 11%. Operating income increased 7% as reported and 8% excluding the specified current- and prior-year charges; a comparison should use the same accounting basis on both sides. [1]

A rally with a wider market tailwind
Yahoo Finance’s saved November 4 regular-session observation put MCD at US$280.22, with a last-trade time of 16:00:02 ET. Against November 3’s US$263.04 close, that is US$17.18, or 6.53%, higher. Reported volume was 11,485,102 shares, about 1.91 times the 6,019,863-share mean of the previous 30 completed sessions. This compares daily totals, not a time-of-day volume model. [3]
The move was not happening in isolation. The saved Yum! Brands observation was US$166.31, up 5.92%, at 16:00:03 ET; the S&P 500 index was up 1.58% in its 16:20:01 ET observation. Different timestamps make this context, not a synchronized performance study, and a rising sector does not prove why an individual investor bought McDonald’s. [4,5]

Why the business detail matters
The release points to improvement in the U.S. as the quarter progressed following the company’s intervention on value. That offers one plausible source of reassurance alongside higher earnings and international growth, not proof of a lasting turnaround. Negative guest counts still leave an important question: can value offers bring back visits without weakening restaurant economics? [1,2]
- Demand: separate higher average checks from a genuine recovery in traffic. [2]
- Geography: the international comparable-sales gains softened the weak U.S. headline. [1]
- Costs: the October 30 BLS release showed civilian compensation costs up 0.8% over the quarter and 3.4% over the year ending September. These are economy-wide figures, not McDonald’s own wage increases. [8]
What it means for option sellers
Cboe’s separately saved delayed snapshot displayed 30-day implied volatility of 21.129%, down 3.93 percentage points. Its underlying last trade was November 4 at 15:48:52 ET, earlier than the stock-price observation above. A current IV rank was not independently established, so none is quoted; lower IV can reduce new option premiums even after a strong stock rally. [6]
The wheel still means accepting stock risk: a cash-secured put can become a share purchase, while a covered call caps upside without removing downside. Today’s earnings report is already out, but the next company reporting date was not established in the reviewed announcements. No contract is described here as automatically free of earnings risk. [1,10,11]
Illustrative strikes, not a trade recommendation
For arithmetic only, assume a November 20 US$270 put earns US$2 per share. A standard 100-share contract would bring US$200 gross credit against US$27,000 reserved cash, with a US$268 breakeven before fees and taxes. US$2 is an assumption, not an observed market premium. An illustrative US$290 covered call would cap the sale price of 100 covered shares at US$290. Check live prices and contract terms before trading. [10,11]
Dividend income does not remove assignment risk
The US$1.93 quarterly dividend was declared on September 17, not newly raised today. The issuer lists December 1 as the record date and December 15 as payment date; a record date is not being presented here as a verified ex-dividend date. Covered calls spanning the eventual ex-date can face early assignment, especially when in the money with little remaining time value. Confirm that date separately. [7,11]
Risks and monitoring checks
- Traffic: higher checks can mask fewer visits; weak demand remains a business risk. [2]
- Assignment: a sharp fall can overwhelm the put credit; covered calls retain stock downside. [10,11]
- An educational monitoring checklist reviews live bid/ask, contract terms and assignment funding. [10,11]
- It confirms the ex-date and next earnings date, then reassesses assignment exposure and capped upside. [7,10,11]
A stronger earnings number is encouraging; it does not turn a short put into a risk-free income payment.
What to watch next
- November 6, 08:30 ET: October Employment Situation. Jobs and wages help frame household spending power. [9]
- November 10, 08:30 ET: October CPI. Inflation can affect both consumers’ budgets and interest-rate expectations; neither outcome is known today. [9]
- December 1 and December 15: dividend record and payment dates. For the next operating update, watch traffic, value execution and international sales, rather than projecting today’s share-price gain forward. [1,7]
