Snapshot: 3 August 2026, 03:59–04:10 ET. U.S. equity futures opened the week higher while crude oil moved sharply lower. S&P 500 futures were up 0.54%, Nasdaq-100 futures 0.65%, and Dow futures 0.61%. September WTI traded at $79.61, down 5.98% from its prior settlement. The useful morning frame is not simply ‘risk-on’: cheaper oil, higher equity futures, a still-elevated Treasury curve and an after-hours PLTR earnings event are four different inputs that need separate confirmation after the cash market opens.
Macro overnight
The weekend's clearest new policy fact came from OPEC+. On 2 August 2026, Saudi Arabia, Russia, Iraq, Kuwait, Kazakhstan, Algeria and Oman said they would implement a 188 thousand barrels-per-day production adjustment in September 2026. They also scheduled their next monthly review for 6 September 2026. A separate OPEC statement said the Joint Ministerial Monitoring Committee reviewed May and June production data, noted overall conformity among participating countries and set its next meeting for 4 October 2026. Those are official supply-policy facts; they do not by themselves prove why every oil trade occurred.
| Region | Index | Level | Read |
|---|---|---|---|
| Japan | Nikkei 225 | 63,754.90 | -0.94% |
| Hong Kong | Hang Seng | 25,977.87 | +0.36% to +0.46% |
| China | Shanghai Composite | 3,809.663 | -0.59% |
| Euro area | Euro Stoxx 50 | 6,403.63 | +0.72% |
| Germany | DAX | 25,959.91 | Higher; feed baselines differed |
| United Kingdom | FTSE 100 | 10,870.31 | Near flat; feed signs differed |
Asia did not send one uniform signal. Japan's Nikkei 225 and mainland China's Shanghai Composite finished lower, while Hong Kong's Hang Seng advanced modestly in both feeds. In Europe, the Euro Stoxx 50 and DAX were higher, but the providers used different prior-close baselines for parts of the session. The FTSE 100 sat close enough to unchanged that one feed showed a small gain and the other a small decline. Preserving those conflicts is more informative than forcing a precise regional narrative from incompatible session definitions.
Cross-asset readings were cleaner. Both feeds put December gold at $4,117.40, up about 0.25%, and the U.S. Dollar Index near 99.79, down about 0.13%. Cboe's official delayed feed showed the 31 July VIX last print at 16.07, 0.50% above the 15.99 prior close; that is a completed cash-session reading, not a live overnight VIX market. Official Treasury data put the 31 July 2-year and 10-year closes at 4.28% and 4.75%, a 47-basis-point upward slope.
The official BLS calendar shows no national release on 3 August; its next listed event is June JOLTS on 4 August at 10:00 ET. BEA's next scheduled release is June international trade on 4 August at 08:30 ET. That keeps today's verified official U.S. macro calendar lighter than the rest of the week, but it does not eliminate market-moving private releases or unscheduled headlines. The safest interpretation is simply that there is no confirmed BLS or BEA data point to anchor today's opening move.
Your tickers
PLTR: Palantir's official investor page lists its Q2 2026 earnings webcast for 3 August 2026, and Nasdaq's earnings calendar marks the event as after hours. No result was available at this pre-market snapshot, so the verified checkpoint is the release itself: compare reported revenue, margins, cash generation and updated guidance with the company's prior disclosures before drawing a conclusion from any extended-hours price move.
What to watch today
- 09:30 ET — opening confirmation: check whether the +0.54% / +0.65% U.S. futures signal survives into cash trading and whether market breadth supports the index move.
- Oil and inflation channels: follow WTI around the new $79.61 snapshot and separate the official 188 thousand barrels-per-day September adjustment from later interpretations about demand, inventories or geopolitics.
- Rates and the dollar: compare live 2-year and 10-year yields with Friday's 4.28% / 4.75% official close; a different curve response can change the meaning of a green index future.
- After the close — PLTR: use the issuer release and webcast, not a headline alone, to rebuild the earnings and guidance comparison.
- 4 August calendar: prepare for international trade at 08:30 ET and JOLTS at 10:00 ET rather than importing tomorrow's releases into today's tape.
For wheel education
Overnight futures, a large crude move and a scheduled earnings event do not provide an executable option quote. A clean comparison waits for the listed market, rebuilds the exact bid, ask, open interest and collateral requirement, and treats event risk as a scenario rather than a forecast.
The morning board therefore starts with one strong divergence: U.S. equity futures higher and WTI almost 6% lower. OPEC+'s weekend decision supplies a verified policy fact, but not a complete causal story. PLTR supplies the day's clearest verified portfolio event, but not yet a result. Keeping those boundaries intact turns the snapshot into a checklist instead of a prediction. This article is educational information, not personalized financial advice or an order recommendation.
