Key takeaways
- Gilead raised its 2026 product-sales outlook by US$900 million at the midpoint.
- HIV growth helped lift shares 3.06% on Friday, but annual loss guidance worsened.
- Implied volatility fell after earnings; a higher share price does not necessarily mean richer option premiums.

HIV growth lifts the outlook, not every earnings measure
Gilead closed Friday, October 30 at US$170.68, up US$5.07, or 3.06%, from Thursday’s US$165.61 close. Its October 29 release for the quarter ended September 30 showed stronger HIV drug sales and a higher full-year sales outlook. The rally came with an important catch: the company also forecast a deeper annual loss. [1,2]
Third-quarter product sales rose 13% to US$8.289 billion. Total revenue, which also includes royalties and other revenue, increased about 6.8% to US$8.300 billion from US$7.769 billion. Lower royalty and other revenue partly offset product gains. [1]
Yahoo’s completed-session record showed 11,363,966 shares traded, compared with an average 5,950,045 over the preceding 20 sessions: about 1.91 times normal by that specific measure. Cboe confirmed the close. These are Friday’s regular-session figures, retrieved around 19:16 ET, not live after-hours prices. [2,3]
| Measure | Latest result or outlook | Comparison |
|---|---|---|
| Q3 product sales | US$8.289B | US$7.345B a year earlier |
| Q3 GAAP EPS | US$1.94 | US$2.43 a year earlier |
| Q3 non-GAAP EPS | US$2.55 | US$2.47 a year earlier |
| 2026 product-sales guidance | US$31.0–31.3B | Previously US$30.1–30.4B |
| 2026 GAAP loss per share | US$4.40–4.05 loss | Previously US$3.75–3.40 loss |
| 2026 non-GAAP loss per share | US$1.20–0.85 loss | Previously US$0.65–0.30 loss |
What drove the stronger sales
HIV product sales increased 18% to a rounded US$6.2 billion. Gilead cited higher realized prices, stronger prevention demand and favorable inventory movements. Biktarvy sales rose 10% to US$4.1 billion, while Descovy increased 49% to US$1.0 billion. Inventory movements need not reflect lasting patient demand. [1]
- Trodelvy cancer-drug sales rose 42% to US$506 million, adding a growth engine beyond HIV. [1]
- Veklury sales fell 69% to US$86 million as COVID-related hospitalizations declined. [1]
- Cell-therapy sales fell 18% to US$355 million amid competitive pressure: this was not uniform growth across the portfolio. [1]
Management lifted product-sales guidance to US$31.0–31.3 billion from US$30.1–30.4 billion. That raises the midpoint from US$30.25 billion to US$31.15 billion, a US$900 million increase. Excluding Veklury, the new range is US$30.7–31.0 billion, rather than US$29.8–30.1 billion. These are company forecasts, not promised results. [1]
HIV prevention sales nearly doubled year-over-year.
A sales upgrade can sit beside a larger loss
Full-year GAAP loss guidance deepened to US$4.40–4.05 per share, and non-GAAP loss guidance to US$1.20–0.85. Both include roughly US$9.88 per share from acquired research charges of US$12.4 billion, net of the Lakefront collaboration and related taxes. Non-GAAP does not remove every acquisition cost. [1]
A supportive peer backdrop, with limits
Gilead was not the only large drugmaker advancing: Amgen gained 1.15% and Bristol Myers Squibb rose 1.78% on Friday’s closing comparisons. Gilead’s larger gain is consistent with a favorable response to its own report, but these prices cannot prove which headline caused each trade. [2,4,5]
On October 28, the Federal Reserve held its target range at 3.75–4.00%. Two dissenters preferred a quarter-point increase. [6]

What it means for option sellers
Cboe’s snapshot put 30-day implied volatility at 31.252%, down 3.543 percentage points from the prior reading. Rounded, that is 31.25% versus 34.80%. This is a vendor’s 30-day measure, not the IV of every strike. A reliable current IV rank was not available in the checked evidence, so no rank is assigned. [2]
Lower IV generally reduces an option’s value when other inputs are held constant; a share-price move can work in another direction. Earnings have passed, but that does not make a cash-secured put safe. The wheel can turn a short put into shares after assignment, then a covered call can cap recovery while leaving the stock’s downside largely intact. [9–11]
Payoff arithmetic, not a quoted trade
Assume a hypothetical standard 100-share US$160 put earns US$2 per share: US$200 gross credit against US$16,000 reserved cash. Breakeven is US$158; loss could reach US$15,800 if the stock became worthless, before fees. A hypothetical US$180 covered call caps the share sale price at US$180. No premium, expiry or available contract is being quoted for that call. [9,10]
- These strikes are educational illustrations, not support levels or recommendations; the assumed put premium is not a market quote.
- A real contract would require fresh bid/ask prices, expiry, liquidity and dated-catalyst checks; Friday’s stock close cannot establish the next available option premium.
- Pricing, clinical and acquisition risks can undermine the thesis; an educational monitoring plan would reassess them before relying on assignment or covered calls. [1,9,10]

The next quarterly earnings date was not confirmed on the checked investor-events page; that is an information gap, not proof of an earnings-free holding period. Beyond the near-term calendar, Gilead says Biktarvy’s negotiated Medicare price takes effect January 1, 2028. Pricing, clinical results and acquisition execution remain risks even after a strong sales quarter. [1,14]
