Chip rout hits Asia as Amkor reports record Q2 ahead of Fed meeting
Nasdaq futures lagged and Asian chip shares sold off before Tuesday’s U.S. open, even as oil extended its retreat. Amkor’s new filing showed record second-quarter sales, while the Federal Reserve begins a two-day meeting and U.S. consumer confidence is due at 10:00 a.m. ET.

Macro overnight
Tuesday’s dominant signal was a sharp rotation away from semiconductor exposure. Reuters reported that South Korea’s KOSPI fell more than 8% early enough to trigger a circuit breaker and Japan’s Nikkei dropped 4%, following Monday’s 2.2% decline in the Philadelphia Semiconductor Index. The later timestamped charts were weaker still: the KOSPI closed near 6,023.66, down 10.7%, and the Nikkei near 62,313.21, down 5.8%. Hong Kong’s Hang Seng was up 0.6%, while Shanghai’s composite was down 1.5%. The divergence matters: this was concentrated technology pressure rather than a uniform exit from every Asian market.
| Market | Reading | Move / context |
|---|---|---|
| S&P 500 futures | 7,432.75 | -0.2% vs. chart baseline |
| Nasdaq 100 futures | 27,931.00 | -2.4% vs. chart baseline |
| Dow futures | 52,435 | +1.0% vs. chart baseline |
| Brent crude | $85.78/bbl | extended Monday’s retreat |
| U.S. dollar index | 101.55 | +0.1% vs. chart baseline |
| Gold futures | $4,046.80/oz | roughly flat vs. chart baseline |
The U.S. futures split reinforces the rotation. The Nasdaq 100 contract was down 2.4% near 3:58 a.m. ET, while Dow futures were up 1.0% and S&P 500 futures were down only 0.2%. Europe was also uneven in the same timestamped feed: the Euro Stoxx 50 was down 0.4%, while Germany’s DAX and Britain’s FTSE 100 were higher. These are moving futures and index snapshots, not forecasts for the 9:30 a.m. ET cash open.
Oil kept unwinding part of last week’s geopolitical premium. Reuters put Brent at $87.55 after Monday’s nearly 9% plunge; the later Yahoo chart showed $85.78 at 3:58 a.m. ET, with WTI at $80.66. The same Reuters report put the 10-year Treasury yield near 4.64%, about four basis points lower. Official Treasury data show Monday closes of 4.31% for two years and 4.65% for ten years. The dollar index stood near 101.55 and gold futures near $4,046.80. Cboe’s official VIX close was 18.67 on Monday, so the volatility backdrop was elevated but should not be confused with an overnight tradable VIX quote.

| AMKR | Q2 sales $1.898B; gross margin 16.8%; diluted EPS $0.70. Q3 sales guide $1.95B–$2.05B. | Issuer exhibit to July 27 SEC 8-K |
| NVDA | Reuters said shares fell 5% after a report on possible OpenAI financing guarantees. | Reuters, citing The Wall Street Journal |
| ASML | Reuters reported an 8.5% early decline as China chip-tool competition drew focus. | Reuters, citing The Information |
AMKR has the cleanest company-specific evidence. Amkor’s SEC-filed release says second-quarter sales rose 26% year over year to $1.898 billion, gross margin increased to 16.8% from 12.0%, and diluted earnings rose to $0.70 from $0.22. Management guided third-quarter sales to $1.95–$2.05 billion and gross margin to 18.5%–19.5%. A delayed premarket chart indicated $55.26 at 4:08 a.m. ET, about 9.0% below Monday’s $60.71 regular-session close. That indication can change quickly and does not replace the official filing or a live broker quote.
NVDA and ASML reflect the broader AI-capital-spending debate. Reuters said Nvidia fell 5% after The Wall Street Journal reported talks about roughly $250 billion of financing guarantees for OpenAI, while ASML fell 8.5% after The Information reported domestic Chinese progress in immersion deep-ultraviolet lithography. Those reports are material context, but neither proves a change in long-run demand by itself; the immediate fact is that financing and competitive-risk questions were repriced across the chip complex.
Wheel lens: separate a volatile tape from a controlled setup
A large overnight or premarket move can widen stock and option spreads. Educational review requires a fresh regular-session chain, current bid-ask quotes, the exact expiry and strike, earnings dates, and fully reserved cash; a delayed indication is not an entry signal.
What to watch today
| Time | Event | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| All day | Federal Reserve meeting begins | The official calendar runs July 28–29; the policy decision is Wednesday |
| 9:30 a.m. | U.S. cash-market open | Tests whether the chip-led futures split persists in live liquidity |
| 10:00 a.m. | July U.S. Consumer Confidence | The Conference Board’s official monthly release |
| During session | Oil, yields and semiconductor breadth | Checks whether the macro relief and technology stress remain separate |
The practical checklist is to compare the Nasdaq’s opening breadth with the Dow rather than reading one headline index, confirm whether Brent holds below the early $87.55 Reuters reading, and wait for the official 10:00 a.m. confidence release before interpreting the consumer signal. The Federal Reserve meeting starts today but concludes Wednesday; treating Tuesday as decision day would be a calendar error. These are observation points for education, not predictions or transaction instructions.
