Key takeaways
- Reddit fell 29.22% on October 30 despite 53% quarterly revenue growth.
- Search referrals, not a collapse in reported ad sales, are the central concern.
- Management’s Q4 user warning is conditional, not a confirmed outcome.
- Lower post-results IV does not remove assignment risk.

A strong quarter, a much weaker share price
Reddit’s October 29 earnings release set up a brutal Friday repricing. Shares closed October 30 at US$91.73, down US$37.87 from US$129.60, with 33,313,200 shares traded. That was 6.75 times the 4,933,670-share average across the preceding 20 sessions, calculated from Yahoo’s daily history. These are last-session figures, not Sunday live prices. [1]
The business had not suddenly stopped growing. For the quarter ended September 30, revenue rose 53% to US$895 million, advertising revenue increased 54% to US$847 million, and GAAP net income reached US$283 million. Diluted earnings were US$1.40 a share. Operating cash flow was US$364 million; free cash flow, after capital spending, was US$363 million. [2]

Why the outlook outweighed the results
The uncomfortable detail is audience quality and distribution. Global daily active uniques averaged 130.3 million, up 12% year over year, but U.S. daily active uniques fell 2% to 50.7 million. U.S. users were also below the second quarter’s 53.2 million. Strong monetization can support revenue while the audience pipeline weakens; the two measures need not move together. [2][3]
In his shareholder letter, CEO Steve Huffman said search-referral declines accelerated late in Q3. During October, search traffic dropped by more than one million referrals per week on average. If that pace continued, he said Q4 daily active uniques could fall by a low-double-digit percentage from roughly 130 million. Referrals are visits, not a count of unique users lost, and the warning is conditional. [3]
There is a counterweight. Logged-in and app audiences grew sequentially and together account for over 80% of monetization, according to management. Reddit plans Q4 tests of a logged-in-only experience in selected markets outside the United States. That could improve retention and advertising signals, but the letter supplies no exact rollout date or guaranteed payoff. [3]
Reddit is earning more from its audience while warning that an important route into that audience is shrinking.
| Measure | Q3 2026 actual | Q4 2026 company outlook |
|---|---|---|
| Revenue | 895 | 1,000–1,030 |
| Adjusted EBITDA (non-GAAP) | 402 | 480–510 |
| Global daily active uniques | 130.3 million | Conditional decline warning; no fixed target |
| Logged-in-only tests | Not a completed global rollout | Selected non-U.S. markets; exact date unspecified |
Not simply an advertising recession
The sector comparison matters. Meta’s October 21 report showed Q3 ad impressions up 10% and average price per ad up 14% year over year. On October 30, Meta fell 1.53%, Pinterest 2.81% and Snap 5.99%, all much less than Reddit’s 29.22% loss. Those businesses are not identical, and prices alone cannot prove causation, but Reddit’s traffic warning is a more specific issue than a blanket collapse in digital-ad demand. [4][5][6][7]
What it means for option sellers
Cboe’s delayed snapshot covering Friday’s session reports 30-day implied volatility of 64.90%, down 16.03 percentage points. Its feed stamp is October 31, 00:04:42, with no timezone specified; it was retrieved November 1, 16:21 EST. [8]
This is not a live quote. IV rank was not verified, and one 30-day estimate does not describe every strike or expiry. Check live prices before trading. [8]
For the wheel, the question is whether assignment still makes economic sense after the outlook changes, not whether the stock looks cheaper than Thursday. A cash-secured put commits cash to buy shares at its strike; a covered call keeps the stock’s downside while limiting upside. The October 29 report has passed, but that does not make the November 6 expiry free of news risk. [9][10]
Education, not a quoted setup
An illustrative November 6 US$85 put with an assumed US$2 premium would reserve US$8,500 for 100 shares, collect US$200 and break even at US$83 before fees. At US$70 on expiry, the loss would be US$1,300. A US$100 covered call would cap the share sale price at US$100 plus premium. Neither strike is a recommendation or a live offer. [9][10]
The risk premium cannot fix
An abrupt change in expected user growth can overwhelm a small option credit. A lower strike provides distance, not a floor under the shares.
- Thesis check: separate reported cash generation from the conditional audience warning.
- Risk check: a premium is not protection against another sharp price gap.
- Educational management scenario: reassess new disclosures before treating a roll or assignment as a routine next step.
What to watch next
The macro backdrop is also worth separating from company execution. September U.S. payrolls rose only 29,000 and unemployment was 4.2%, according to the October 2 release. That is context for consumer spending and advertising budgets, not evidence that it caused Friday’s Reddit move. [11]
- November 2: watch the next session’s trading against Friday’s US$89.28 low and US$101.98 high; neither level is guaranteed support or resistance. [1]
- November 6, 8:30 a.m. ET: October U.S. employment data arrive before that day’s option expiry. [12]
- During Q4: watch any dated update on referral trends and overseas login tests. No exact test-launch date or next earnings date is asserted here. [3]
The useful distinction is between a profitable quarter and a dependable future audience. Reddit has demonstrated the first. Its own disclosure leaves the second open, which is why a post-earnings discount is not, by itself, an options-selling thesis.
