Shopify grows 32%, but payments mix tests gross margins

Shopify’s Q3 revenue and cash flow rose, but lower-margin merchant services changed the mix. Exact results, a dated premarket reaction and the next risks for option sellers.

Key takeaways

  • Shopify’s Q3 revenue rose 32%, but gross profit grew more slowly.
  • Merchant services drove sales; their lower margin makes the revenue mix important.
  • A sharp premarket fall is a dated snapshot, not a live trading price.
  • Strong cash generation does not remove stock or option-assignment risk.

A strong quarter, a harsh early reaction

Shopify reported third-quarter results on November 3 for the period ended September 30, 2026. Revenue reached US$3.742 billion, versus US$2.844 billion a year earlier, a rounded 32% increase. GAAP net income was US$462 million, or US$0.36 per diluted share; non-GAAP diluted earnings were US$0.49, versus US$0.34 a year earlier. Those profit measures are not interchangeable. 1

The shares nevertheless displayed US$134.49 on Nasdaq at 09:21 ET, down US$21.73, or 13.91%, from Monday’s US$156.22 close. This is a frozen November 3 premarket snapshot, not a current executable quote or a completed-session return. Monday’s separate, pre-results decline was US$1.27, or 0.81%. 2

Payments growth is not software-margin growth

The operating story is about what grows, not just how fast. Merchant Solutions revenue increased a rounded 35% to US$2.906 billion, while Subscription Solutions rose 20% to US$836 million. Gross merchandise volume—the value of orders facilitated, not Shopify revenue—reached US$119.145 billion, up 29% as reported. More commerce can lift sales without producing the same profit percentage as subscriptions. 1

Calculated from the release, Merchant Solutions supplied 77.7% of revenue. Its gross margin was 38.5%, compared with 79.1% for subscriptions. The blended gross margin fell to 47.6% from 48.9%; subscription margin also declined. This explains why a revenue headline alone misses an important business trade-off. It does not establish one exclusive cause for the stock’s fall. Meanwhile, operating income rose faster than revenue, so lower gross margin is not the same as lower overall operating profitability. 1

Cash generation strengthened: US$818 million of operating cash flow minus US$2 million of capital spending produced US$816 million of non-GAAP free cash flow. There is a useful accounting caveat: since April, merchant cash advances are classified in investing rather than operating cash flows. The release identifies US$30 million of net cash use there for Q3; the headline free-cash-flow measure is not a complete picture of lending-related cash deployment. 1

YieldCove perspective
Faster sales and a lower gross margin can coexist. For an option seller, neither a growth headline nor a larger premium replaces downside analysis.

Separate company results from the wider retail tape

Monday’s completed Yahoo daily bar recorded 13,872,400 SHOP shares, 1.74 times the preceding 20-session average of 7,979,125. That is historical November 2 volume, not Tuesday premarket turnover. Related commerce names were mixed that day: Amazon rose 2.20%, Etsy gained 3.92%, and Wix lost 2.75%. Their different business models and timing make them context, not proof of a common earnings driver. 3 4 5 6

The consumer backdrop is supportive but not a Shopify forecast. The Census Bureau’s October 15 release put September U.S. retail and food-services sales at US$745.0 billion, up 0.8% month over month and 6.3% year over year. These estimates are seasonally adjusted but not adjusted for price changes. U.S. retail sales cannot be treated as Shopify’s global merchant sales or as inflation-adjusted demand. 7

What it means for option sellers

A wheel strategy can begin with a cash-secured put and move to covered calls after assignment. The earnings release is now past, but a put seller still accepts the obligation to buy shares at the strike if assigned. A covered call retains substantial stock downside while limiting upside. A lower share price does not, by itself, make either position safer. 9 10

Post-results implied volatility and IV rank were not independently established for this article. No numerical IV, premium yield or probability of profit is inferred from the share-price decline. Falling IV can help a short option, all else equal, but an adverse stock move can outweigh that benefit. A fresh contract quote, spread and liquidity check would be necessary to evaluate an actual setup. 9 10

The premium is only a limited cushion

A November 6 expiration would span the scheduled October employment report at 08:30 ET. A price gap can overwhelm option income. Cash reserved for assignment funds the purchase; it does not guarantee the shares retain their value. 8 9

Hypothetical strikes—not quoted contracts

Assume a simplified 100-share US$120 put with an entirely hypothetical US$2 premium per share. Assignment requires US$12,000; the credit is US$200 and expiry breakeven US$118 before fees. At a US$100 stock price, the net loss is US$1,800. A hypothetical US$150 covered call caps the assigned share-sale price at US$150. These teaching assumptions are not recommendations or current premiums. 9 10

  • Business risk: Q4 gross-profit growth is guided below revenue growth; the mix and cost base both matter. 1
  • Option risk: assignment can leave a put seller owning shares after a large fall; rolling does not erase the economic loss. 9
  • Reassessment framework: compare new contract prices with the updated outlook, and consider whether an assigned shareholding would still fit a non-personal risk plan.

What to watch next

  • November 6, 08:30 ET: October Employment Situation; a dated consumer-demand and market-risk checkpoint. 8
  • November 10, 08:30 ET: October CPI; another scheduled release, not a forecast of inflation or the stock reaction. 8
  • Q4 2026: test management’s low-thirties revenue-growth and high-twenties gross-profit-growth outlook. The next Shopify earnings-release date was not confirmed for this article. 1
