What happened: growth did not pay the whole cash bill
Alphabet released third-quarter results on October 28 for the period ended September 30, 2026. Revenue rose 25% to US$127.577 billion, while operating income increased 30% to $40.576 billion. Those are substantial gains, but investors also had to weigh weaker earnings available to common shareholders and another quarter of negative free cash flow. All dollar amounts below are U.S. dollars. [1]
Yahoo Finance showed GOOGL at $291.40 at 06:14:37 ET on October 29, down $33.49, or 10.31%, from the previous regular close. That is a timestamped premarket observation, not today’s closing price or a live trading offer. On October 28, before the report, the regular session had ended at $324.89, up $4.31, or 1.34%, versus October 27. [2][3]
Yahoo’s daily-history bar recorded 60,294,600 shares on October 28, versus a calculated 24,298,575-share average across the preceding 20 sessions: 2.48 times average. This is a comparison within that daily-bar dataset, not a measurement of this morning’s premarket turnover. [3]

Why the market focused on cash, not just Cloud
Google Cloud revenue rose 103% to $30.709 billion, with AI infrastructure, AI solutions and core cloud services contributing. Alphabet also said sales of its TPU computing systems meaningfully supported growth. Cloud operating income reached $11.121 billion, a calculated 36.2% margin; this was not simply revenue growth without segment profit. [1]
The problem was the balance between growth, expectations and spending. Search and other revenue rose 12% to $63.350 billion, but CNBC reported a $64.96 billion analyst estimate. Total revenue also fell short of the $128.22 billion LSEG consensus cited by CNBC. Missing expectations does not mean revenue contracted; it means the market had priced in more. [1][4]
| Metric | Reported | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Revenue | 127.577 | 25% year-over-year growth |
| Search & other revenue | 63.350 | 12% year-over-year growth |
| Google Cloud revenue | 30.709 | 103% year-over-year growth |
| Operating income | 40.576 | 30% year-over-year growth |
| Diluted EPS, common shares | US$2.12 | US$2.87 a year earlier |
| Operating cash flow | 42.290 | Cash generated by operations |
| Cash property/equipment purchases | 51.355 | Capital spending |
| Non-GAAP free cash flow | −9.065 | Operating cash flow less capital spending |
Operating cash flow of $42.290 billion did not cover $51.355 billion of cash property-and-equipment purchases, leaving negative $9.065 billion in non-GAAP free cash flow. Separately, an $8.664 billion loss on equity securities reduced diluted EPS by $0.55 after tax, according to Alphabet. Common-share EPS was $2.12 versus $2.87 a year earlier; the investment loss should not be confused with a collapse in operating profit. [1]
- Cloud strength and advertising disappointment can coexist; they describe different businesses. [1][4]
- Cash capital spending is an immediate funding demand, while accounting profit measures something different. [1]
- Peer context matters: Microsoft reported 48% Azure revenue growth for the same September-ended quarter. These cloud businesses have different scopes, so the percentages are not a like-for-like market-share ranking. [1][5]
Fast-growing Cloud does not automatically mean the cash investment is already paying for itself.
What it means for option sellers
OptionCharts displayed 30-day implied volatility of 39.00% and IV rank of 73.98%, dated October 29, when retrieved at 06:16 ET. The page says options are 15-minute delayed and the market is closed. Its date-only volatility reading is not proof of a post-earnings executable price, nor evidence that premiums have already reset. Check live prices before trading. [6]
For the wheel, the central question is not just premium size: assignment means owning the shares through further downside. [10] The October 28 earnings announcement is behind the stock, but macro news and peer earnings can still change its price. [1][8][9] A covered call exchanges some upside for premium; it does not insure the stock against a fresh decline. [11]
Illustration only—not a quoted setup
A hypothetical $280 put sold for $3 per share on a standard 100-share contract brings in $300 and requires $28,000 of gross cash backing. Breakeven is $277; at a $250 expiry price, the loss is $2,700 before fees. A hypothetical $310 covered call caps the share sale price at $310, apart from premium. Neither premium nor contract is an executable quote. [10][11]
Main risk
An earnings gap can exceed the premium collected. Cash collateral funds assignment; it does not prevent a large stock loss. [10][11]
- Risk check: distinguish a dated volatility statistic from current bid/ask prices. [6]
- Risk check: strike selection cannot remove the obligation to buy assigned shares or the downside on covered shares. [10][11]
- Monitoring plan: compare refreshed premiums, spreads and assignment exposure only after the market reopens; this is a research checklist, not an instruction to enter a trade.
What to watch next
The backdrop is not a fresh rate cut: the Federal Reserve held its target range at 3.75%–4.00% on October 28. That makes the next inflation and growth readings relevant context, not a promised explanation for Alphabet’s next move. [7]
- October 29, 08:30 ET: BEA schedules the advance Q3 GDP estimate and September Personal Income and Outlays, including the PCE inflation release. These results were not yet released at the research cutoff. [8]
- October 29, 17:00 ET: Amazon’s Q3 earnings call provides another cloud-demand checkpoint. This is the confirmed call time, not an asserted release minute. [9]
- December 7 and 14: Alphabet’s common dividend record and payment dates, respectively, at $0.22 per share. The release does not identify an ex-dividend date; record date is not a substitute for verifying it. [1]
The next Alphabet earnings date was not confirmed in the consulted issuer release. Any later option example needs its own calendar check rather than an assumption that earnings risk has disappeared. The practical distinction is simple: reported business growth, actual cash generation and the price paid for risk are three different things. [1][10][11]
