Key takeaways
- Microsoft turned lower in an early regular-session snapshot after a positive premarket reading. [4][6]
- Azure generated US$33.165 billion; management expects 49%–50% currency-adjusted growth next quarter. [1][2]
- The next test is delivery and margins, not whether a large backlog guarantees tomorrow’s price. [2][3]

What happened: the opening tape changed the story
Microsoft’s earnings bounce did not survive the first minutes of regular trading on October 29. OptionCharts showed US$528.83 at 09:34 ET, down $2.18, or 0.41%, from the previous $531.01 close. [6]
A saved Yahoo Finance observation had shown $546.07, up 2.84%, at 09:19:50 ET before the open. These are dated snapshots from different providers, not live offers or today’s final result. All amounts below are U.S. dollars. [4][6]
The new market reaction follows October 28 results for the September 30 quarter, Microsoft’s fiscal Q1 2027. Revenue was $92.279 billion, up 19%; operating income was $45.915 billion, up 21%. GAAP diluted earnings were $4.92 per share; the $4.89 adjusted figure excludes OpenAI investment effects. Those measures should not be mixed. [1]
The October 28 daily-history bar recorded 27,681,000 shares, versus a calculated 20,074,990 average across the preceding 20 sessions: 1.38 times average. That is a completed-session comparison, not this morning’s trading pace. [5]

Why Azure’s new scorecard matters
Microsoft disclosed quarterly Azure revenue in dollars for the first time: $33.165 billion, up 48%. That is a calculated 35.9% of total company revenue. The disclosure gives readers a clearer measure of Azure’s size rather than only a growth percentage. It is the first quarterly dollar disclosure, not a claim that Microsoft never disclosed annual Azure revenue. [1][12]
These are also the first quarterly results under the segment structure announced in September. Agents and Infra generated $76.795 billion, up 25%, while Devices and Consumer generated $15.484 billion, down 3%. Microsoft recast earlier comparisons; the reporting change itself was not newly announced yesterday. [1][2]
| Measure | Management outlook | Main qualification |
|---|---|---|
| Company revenue | US$96B–97.1B | 18%–19% annual growth |
| Azure growth | 49%–50% | Constant currency |
| Microsoft Cloud gross margin | About 65% | Versus 66% in fiscal Q1 |
| Capital expenditures | Over US$50B | Not identical to cash property purchases |
CFO Amy Hood attributed Azure’s strength to Foundry, the AI-app platform, and better use of existing CPU capacity. Engineering gains helped offset delayed third-party capacity. The bullish interpretation is better monetization; the risk is that efficiency gains and delivery timing can vary between quarters. Management’s 49%–50% Azure growth outlook assumes further improvement, not unlimited capacity already installed. [2]
Customer demand continues to exceed available supply.
- Demand is not equally strong everywhere: commercial bookings fell 12% year over year, partly because of large prior-year Azure commitments. [2][3]
- Contracted future revenue was $677 billion, up 73% annually but below the preceding quarter’s $678 billion. Backlog is not immediate revenue or cash. [2][3]
- The peer checkpoint is Amazon’s October 29 results call at 17:00 ET. AWS commentary can inform the cloud-demand debate; it cannot establish Microsoft’s future market share. [8]
There is also fresh macro context. At 08:30 ET on October 29, BEA released September PCE inflation of 0.5% month over month and 3.6% year over year; excluding food and energy, prices rose 0.3% and 3.1%, respectively. Inflation and company-specific execution both deserve attention. The available evidence does not isolate either as the cause of every opening trade. [7]
What it means for option sellers
OptionCharts displayed 30-day implied volatility of 32.00% and IV rank of 48.31%, dated October 29, when opened at 09:35 ET. The page labels options 15-minute delayed. These are provider statistics, not an executable premium or a measured post-earnings volatility change. Check live prices before trading. [6]
For the wheel, a short put still commits the seller to buying assigned shares. A covered call still leaves stock downside while limiting upside. Earnings have been released, but the opening reversal illustrates why a positive business report does not remove price risk. The next Microsoft earnings date was not confirmed in the consulted issuer documents. [1][2][10][11]
Illustration only—not a quoted setup
A hypothetical standard 100-share $520 put sold for $4 per share brings in $400 and requires $52,000 gross cash backing. Breakeven is $516; at $500 on expiry, the loss is $1,600 before fees. A hypothetical $550 covered call could require selling shares at $550 even after a larger rally. No expiry, actual premium or recommended strike is asserted. [10][11]
The main risk
Delayed capacity can shift spending, not cancel it. Microsoft expects more than $50 billion of fiscal Q2 capital expenditure. Collected premium cannot insure assigned or covered shares against a large decline. [2][10][11]
What to watch next
- October 29, 17:00 ET: Amazon’s confirmed results-call time, not an asserted release minute. [8]
- November 19: Microsoft’s $0.98-per-share ex-dividend date; covered calls can face early assignment around dividends. Payment is December 10. [9][11]
- November 25, 08:30 EST: the next BEA Personal Income and Outlays release. [7]
- Monitoring plan: compare fresh option spreads, cash obligations and calendar exposure; treat management guidance as a test, not a promise.
