Apple’s record sales meet a tougher margin outlook

Apple’s US$114.477bn quarter includes a tariff-refund boost. The December margin forecast and a separately timed after-hours decline reset the questions for option sellers.

Key takeaways

  • Apple reported US$114.477 billion of quarterly sales, but tariff refunds lifted reported profit.
  • The December-quarter margin outlook matters more than the backward-looking record.
  • AAPL fell before the release and was lower again in a separately timed after-hours snapshot.
  • Option sellers face repricing, product-launch and economic-data risks—not guaranteed income.

Record sales, but a softer profit outlook

Apple delivered a record September quarter on Monday, November 2. Sales for the fiscal fourth quarter ended September 26 reached US$114.477 billion, compared with US$102.466 billion a year earlier. Diluted earnings per share rose to US$2.10 from US$1.85. The headline is strong; the quality and durability of the profit increase need a closer look; all money figures here are U.S. dollars. 12

The stock’s timeline matters. AAPL closed at US$338.32, down US$6.31, or 1.83%, from Friday’s US$344.63—before the earnings release. At 7:14 p.m. ET, Nasdaq showed US$328.20, another US$10.12, or 2.99%, below that regular close. This is a timestamped extended-session observation, not the final after-hours price or a forecast for Tuesday. 34

At 7:14 p.m. ET, Yahoo’s daily-bar snapshot showed 58,167,285 shares, 43.95% above its preceding 20-session mean of 40,408,490. A raw refresh at 8:06 p.m. ET showed 64,689,155 shares, leaving a revision-or-scope conflict unresolved. These are provider-snapshot figures, not verified final regular-session turnover. The chart uses closing prices only and excludes the separately timed after-hours price. 3

Why the record did not settle the debate

iPhone and Mac carried the quarter. Their revenue grew 17.46% and 23.68%, respectively, while iPad fell 10.40% and Wearables, Home and Accessories declined 7.91%. Services reached a record US$31.573 billion, up 9.82%. That mix shows why “Apple growth” is not one uniform story: strong phones and computers coexist with weaker categories. 12

Apple said tariff refunds added approximately one percentage point to its 47.9% gross margin and US$0.05 to diluted EPS. Simple subtraction leaves about 46.9% margin and US$2.05 EPS without those stated benefits. These are illustrative subtractions, not a company-issued adjusted earnings measure, and they are not a forecast. A refund is not evidence that ongoing product economics improved by the same amount. 1

The forward issue is costs. CNBC’s updated reporting of the earnings call puts December-quarter revenue-growth guidance at 7%–10% and gross-margin guidance at 45%–46%, versus LSEG’s 46.3% margin estimate. CNBC also reports higher memory costs. These are reported management forecasts and analyst estimates, not achieved results; a sales beat does not automatically protect next quarter’s profitability. 5

  • Demand strength: iPhone and Mac growth provide genuine operating support, rather than relying solely on the refund. [2]
  • Uneven hardware backdrop: HPQ closed at US$28.43, down 1.22%, and DELL at US$392.78, down 7.43%. These pre-release peer moves are context, not proof Apple caused them. 67
  • Rate sensitivity remains: the Fed held its target at 3.75%–4.00% on October 28. Rates still matter when investors value future technology profits. 8

What it means for option sellers

The earnings announcement has happened, but the next options session must absorb the new outlook. No independently verified post-release implied volatility or IV rank was available for this article. Pre-report readings are not current premiums; lower event uncertainty can reduce option values, while a falling share price can still hurt a short put. Neither effect guarantees a profitable close. 1112

For the wheel—selling cash-secured puts, then covered calls if shares are assigned—the practical question is whether the share obligation remains acceptable after the margin warning. A hypothetical US$320 put or US$350 covered call illustrates different obligations, not recommended strikes, observed quotes, confirmed listings or a trade setup. No premium, delta or probability is invented here. 1112

The main risk

A lower strike is not protection against a further gap down. Assignment can turn a small option credit into a large stock exposure, while a covered call caps recovery above its strike.

Educational arithmetic, not a quote

Assume a standard 100-share contract. A hypothetical US$320 cash-secured put requires US$32,000 of assignment cash. If shares finish at US$300 and assignment occurs, the US$20-per-share shortfall is US$2,000 before subtracting premium received and adding fees. The premium is deliberately unspecified. 11

A covered call at the hypothetical US$350 strike exchanges upside beyond that level for an unspecified credit. It does not erase downside in the shares. Calls extending across a dividend require an early-assignment check; the release gives a record date and payment date, which should not be casually relabeled as an exchange-confirmed ex-dividend date. 112

What to watch next

  • November 3: the first regular session after the report will show the opening repricing. It may differ materially from the evening snapshot.
  • November 6: Apple says the new touchscreen MacBook Pro becomes available. Launch availability is a demand checkpoint, not guaranteed sales. 9
  • November 6, 8:30 a.m. ET: the BLS schedules the October Employment Situation report. It is another rate-sensitive event before that day’s close. 10
  • November 12 and 16: Apple’s US$0.27 dividend has a November 12 record date and November 16 payment date. Confirm the ex-date separately. 1

The next test is whether growth survives higher component costs without leaning on another refund. Longer-dated option examples also need a newly confirmed earnings calendar: this article does not establish Apple’s next reporting date. Check live prices, the actual contract specification and the latest company disclosures before evaluating any option.
