Weekly recap: tech tumbles as energy leads and VIX climbs
The Nasdaq fell 2.90% from July 10 to July 17 while energy gained 4.72% and technology lost 5.49%. Cooler CPI and PPI, firmer import prices and a VIX close at 18.77 left a mixed setup ahead of GOOGL, TSLA, INTC and NOK earnings.

U.S. equities ended the July 13–17, 2026 week lower, with the technology-heavy Nasdaq taking the largest hit. Energy led the sector board, broad volatility rose, and Treasury yields finished slightly below the prior Friday despite large swings during the week. The macro record was mixed: consumer and producer inflation cooled in June, retail sales edged higher, and import prices continued to rise.

The week in 5 points
- Technology carried the decline. From the July 10 close to July 17, the Nasdaq fell 2.90%, compared with losses of 1.55% for the S&P 500 and 0.93% for the Dow.
- Sector leadership flipped defensive and energy-heavy. XLE gained 4.72%, real estate rose 2.18% and consumer staples added 1.28%; technology lost 5.49%, consumer discretionary fell 1.57% and industrials declined 1.36%.
- Volatility repriced higher. VIX traded from a weekly low of 15.64 to a high of 19.50 and closed Friday at 18.77, up 24.9% from July 10. That is a larger cost for broad protection, not proof that every single-stock premium became attractive.
- Rates moved less than equities. The official Treasury curve ended with the 2-year yield at 4.18% and the 10-year at 4.55%, down 3 and 1 basis point, respectively, from July 10 after moving higher early in the week.
- Inflation improved, but the signal was not one-way. June CPI fell 0.4% month over month and core CPI was unchanged; PPI fell 0.3%. Retail sales rose 0.2%, although the Census Bureau's 90% confidence interval included zero, while import prices increased 0.3%.

The tracked universe came from the live YieldCove watchlist plus current open option positions and long-term holdings. A price move is an observation; it is not a diagnosis or a forecast.

Wheel seller takeaways
A higher VIX can lift broad option values, but this week's 19%–21% declines in several tracked growth names show why premium and assignment risk must be evaluated together. A robust educational process separates index volatility from the stock's own earnings date, checks whether the cash-secured obligation remains acceptable after a gap, and compares the credit on a per-share basis with the full per-contract collateral. GOOGL, TSLA, INTC and NOK appear on next week's earnings calendar, so event timing is likely to matter more than Friday's VIX close alone.
Next week
- Monday, July 20, 11:00 a.m. ET: New York Fed Survey of Consumer Expectations credit-access results.
- Tuesday, July 21, 8:30 a.m. ET: Philadelphia Fed Non-Manufacturing Survey.
- Wednesday, July 22, after the close: Nasdaq lists GOOGL, TSLA and NOW for earnings. Issuer investor-relations pages should be rechecked before the event.
- Thursday, July 23: Initial unemployment claims at 8:30 a.m. ET; Nasdaq lists NOK before the open and INTC after the close.
- Friday, July 24, 10:00 a.m. ET: U.S. new residential sales. All calendar times are Eastern and remain subject to change.
The week's message was dispersion rather than a single market verdict: energy rose, technology fell sharply, volatility increased, and Treasury yields barely changed on balance. Next week's clustered technology earnings can widen the gap between index-level calm and single-stock risk.
