Morning read: chip rout spreads as oil climbs
A global semiconductor selloff reached Wall Street while renewed Middle East tension lifted oil and volatility. June housing starts rebounded sharply, but weaker permits left a mixed signal for growth and rates.

Late-recovery edition
This morning read was refreshed after the opening bell at 10:25 a.m. ET because the 4:05 a.m. heartbeat was not recovered on schedule. Every market quote below is a timestamped delayed snapshot, not a live entry signal.
Macro overnight
The overnight message was risk-off, led by semiconductors. Reuters reported that the broad Asia-Pacific index excluding Japan fell more than 3%, Japan’s Nikkei lost about 4%, Taiwan’s benchmark dropped roughly 6%, China’s CSI 300 fell 3.6%, and Hong Kong’s Hang Seng declined 1.8%. Europe held up better because its benchmarks carry less technology hardware: the STOXX Europe 600 was down 0.5% around 10:08 a.m. ET. Yahoo index snapshots independently matched those directions and magnitudes.
| Market | Move | Read-through |
|---|---|---|
| Taiwan benchmark | ≈ −6.0% | The heaviest pressure sat in the global chip supply chain. |
| Nikkei 225 | −4.0% | Japan joined the hardware-led selloff. |
| CSI 300 | −3.6% | Mainland blue chips also weakened. |
| Hang Seng | −1.8% | Hong Kong fell, with technology weaker than the broad index. |
| STOXX Europe 600 | −0.5% | Europe’s lower hardware weight softened the hit. |
| QQQ / SOXX | −1.12% / −1.50% | U.S. growth and chip shares stayed under pressure at 10:24–10:25 a.m. ET. |
A second risk channel came from energy. Reuters measured Brent crude up 2.0% and U.S. crude up 2.5% around 10:08 a.m. ET as renewed Middle East military strikes kept supply risk in focus; both contracts were on course for weekly gains above 11%. Yahoo futures showed the same direction four minutes later, although the gains had already widened, which is why this article avoids freezing a single oil price. The U.S. dollar was broadly flat. Gold was researched but no exact level is printed because fast-moving source timestamps did not line up closely enough.

The 8:30 a.m. data: a big headline, a mixed detail
The U.S. Census Bureau reported June housing starts at a seasonally adjusted annual rate of 1.427 million, up 19.0% from May’s revised 1.199 million. The jump was not broad: single-family starts were 895,000, down 0.2% from May, while units in buildings with five or more homes ran at 513,000. Building permits, a forward-looking gauge, fell 3.0% month over month to 1.367 million. Census also attached wide margins of error to the starts estimates, so one month should not be treated as a clean trend change.
In plain terms
The 19.0% headline rebound says construction activity bounced in June. The 3.0% decline in permits and flat single-family starts say the next leg is less certain, which keeps both growth and rate interpretations open.
Your tickers
| Ticker | Move | What the move says |
|---|---|---|
| CRDO | −5.85% | High-growth connectivity names remained sensitive to AI-position trimming. |
| AMKR | −2.32% | Packaging and test exposure followed the global supply-chain selloff. |
| INTC | −1.35% | The stock stayed caught in the broad chip de-risking. |
| NVDA | −1.18% | The AI bellwether remained a direct pressure point. |
| MRVL | +0.49% | The tape was not one-way; Marvell had recovered into positive territory. |
| MU | +2.27% | Micron also diverged from the weaker chip ETF snapshot. |
The selloff was notable because the latest operating evidence was strong. TSMC’s official second-quarter filing showed US$40.20 billion of revenue, up 33.7% year over year, with net income up 77.4%; management guided third-quarter revenue to US$44.6–45.8 billion. ASML separately reported second-quarter net sales of €9.3 billion, a 54.0% gross margin and basic EPS of €7.59. No fresh issuer announcement after Thursday’s close was verified for CRDO, AMKR, INTC, NVDA, MRVL or MU, so their Friday moves are presented as sector read-through—not as a new company thesis.
For option sellers
A higher VIX can lift option premiums, but an index-volatility spike does not prove that any one contract is liquid or fairly priced. The educational checklist remains contract-level: compare bid and ask, open interest, volume and event timing, and use limit prices rather than treating a wider market premium as free income.
What to watch today
- Semiconductor breadth: whether QQQ and SOXX stabilize while CRDO, AMKR, INTC and NVDA stop making new intraday lows.
- Oil and headlines: fast oil gains can revive inflation concern even while growth-sensitive equities weaken.
- Housing follow-through: the market may weigh the 19.0% starts rebound against permits down 3.0% and single-family starts down 0.2%.
- Earnings calendar: Nasdaq listed no Friday reporter from the live watchlist, open wheel positions or long-term holdings. That reduces scheduled issuer risk, not unscheduled headline risk.
- Data freshness: all displayed quote snapshots must be rechecked after 10:25 a.m. ET; the ticker strip below supplies current app-native prices.
