Palantir earnings: the numbers behind the sovereign-AI push

PLTR reports after the November 2 close. Its US$2.160–2.164B revenue target, sovereign-AI customer updates and earnings risk matter more than a tempting option premium.

The earnings checkpoint is today

Palantir’s sovereign-AI push gets a financial checkpoint on Monday, November 2. The software company plans to release third-quarter results after U.S. markets close and discuss them at 5 p.m. Eastern Time. This is an earnings preview, not a report of results that have already happened. [1]

The starting line is management’s August guidance: US$2.160–2.164 billion of third-quarter revenue and US$1.292–1.296 billion of adjusted operating income. The revenue midpoint, US$2.162 billion, would represent about 11.70% growth from Q2’s exact US$1.935464 billion. Those are company targets and a calculation, not a promise or an analyst consensus estimate. [2]

A weak Friday was not an earnings verdict

PLTR closed Friday, October 30, at US$184.11, down US$12.31, or 6.27%, from Thursday’s US$196.42. Yahoo Finance’s daily bar records 27,007,300 shares traded, around 1.20 times the preceding 20-session average of 22,599,880 shares. These completed-session figures are historical context, not Monday’s live price or volume. [5]

The weakness was broader than Palantir: enterprise-software peers Salesforce and ServiceNow fell 0.75% and 4.15%, respectively, while the Invesco QQQ ETF fell 3.47% that Friday. That comparison puts PLTR’s larger decline in a technology-market context, but price data alone cannot establish its cause. It would be wrong to attribute the move to third-quarter results that had not yet been released. [6–8]

Why sovereign AI matters to the business

Here, sovereign AI means customers keeping control of their data, models and computing infrastructure. On October 21, Palantir described deployments involving L3Harris, McCarthy Building Companies, NVIDIA, Ondas/Regna AI and Tampa General Hospital. The commercial driver is the attempt to turn customer-specific knowledge into useful software without giving up those controls; these are company-described outcomes, not independently measured customer returns. [3]

Nebius provides a separate infrastructure angle. Its September 8 announcement named it Palantir’s preferred sovereign-AI infrastructure partner and said compute and inference would move inside the Palantir perimeter following an integration period. Neither that announcement nor the October customer update isolates a sovereign-AI revenue contribution, so assigning the partnerships a dollar value would overstate the evidence. [3–4]

  • Adoption: customer examples show how the software is being used; they do not establish the size or timing of sales.
  • Growth: Q2 U.S. commercial revenue reached US$764 million, up 149% year over year; U.S. government revenue was US$809 million, up 90%. [2]
  • Economics: Q2 GAAP operating margin was 47%, versus 62% on the company’s adjusted measure. Those measures are not interchangeable. [2]

Adoption headlines explain the opportunity. Reported revenue and the outlook show how much of it is reaching the business.

What it means for option sellers

A cash-secured put is an obligation to buy shares at its strike if assigned, not simply a payment for waiting. The wheel can move from assigned shares to covered calls, but that sequence does not erase a loss if the stock falls sharply. A covered call also limits the upside if an earnings rally carries shares above the call strike. [11–12]

A Cboe delayed-data snapshot retrieved November 2 at 09:20 EST showed indicative 30-day implied volatility of 70.38%. Its underlying last-trade field still referred to October 30, so this is a research snapshot, not a verified live-session option quote. IV rank was not verified; 70.38% is not a percentile or a probability of profit. Check live prices and contract terms before considering any trade. [9]

Earnings can overwhelm the premium

A November 6 expiration comes after tonight’s results and the scheduled November 6 employment report. A post-earnings fall in implied volatility can help a short option, all else equal, but a large adverse stock move can outweigh that benefit. Cash collateral does not prevent a loss. [1, 10–12]

Illustrative strikes, not trade recommendations

Assume a simplified 100-share put with a US$170 strike and an entirely hypothetical US$3 premium per share: US$17,000 covers assignment, the credit is US$300 and expiry breakeven is US$167 before fees. At a US$150 expiry stock price, the option’s net loss would be US$1,700; if the stock became worthless, maximum loss would be US$16,700. A hypothetical US$200 covered call would cap the share sale price at US$200 if assigned. These are teaching assumptions, not quoted premiums, selected contracts or instructions to sell. [11–12]

Risks in plain English

  • Earnings risk: a large downward gap can leave a short put deep in the money; the premium offsets only part of that decline. [11]
  • Covered-call risk: premium income does not remove stock downside, and assignment can cap participation in a rally. [12]

An educational reassessment plan

  • After the webcast, an educational reassessment would compare actual sales and updated guidance with the baselines above, rather than automatically reuse an old strike.
  • Before any hypothetical entry or adjustment, fresh prices, spreads and contract terms would be needed; the saved snapshot is not an order.

What to watch next

  • November 2, after the close: compare Q3 revenue with US$2.160–2.164 billion and read the updated annual outlook. [1–2]
  • November 2, 5 p.m. ET: listen for U.S. commercial growth, implementation timing and any quantified sovereign-AI revenue disclosure; do not assume one will be provided. [1–4]
  • November 6, 8:30 a.m. ET: the BLS schedules October’s Employment Situation release, a separate market catalyst before that day’s option expiration. [10]

The useful distinction is between business progress and an attractive option premium. Tonight’s disclosures can improve the first assessment; a fresh, liquid option quote is still needed for the second. Nothing in the customer announcements guarantees a favorable stock reaction.
