Qualcomm’s auto record meets a 26% handset slump

QCOM falls in a dated November 5 snapshot as weaker phone-chip sales and margin pressure compete with record auto revenue. What the numbers mean for option sellers.

What happened: a sharp reset after earnings

Qualcomm reported fiscal fourth-quarter results on November 4 for the period ended September 27, 2026. Revenue under standard accounting rules (GAAP) fell 8% to $10.322 billion; adjusted, non-GAAP revenue fell 7% to $10.442 billion. Adjusted earnings were $2.17 a share, down 28%, while GAAP earnings were $1.17. These are different accounting measures, not interchangeable versions of the same sales figure. 1

At 11:24 a.m. ET on November 5, Nasdaq displayed QCOM at $153.225, down $19.965, or 11.53%, from the previous $173.19 close. A separately retrieved Yahoo snapshot showed 14,304,879 shares traded, versus an 11,349,220-share average for the preceding 20 completed sessions: already 1.26 times that full-day average. This is a partial-session tally, not a final volume or a time-adjusted trading signal. All dollar amounts in this article are US dollars; these are historical snapshots, not live quotes. 2 3

Why the record auto quarter was not enough

The business split explains the tension. Handsets generated $5.137 billion, down 26%, while automotive reached a record $1.990 billion, up 89%; internet-of-things sales rose 4% to $1.888 billion. Diversification is working in those reported businesses, but it has not eliminated handset exposure. The QCT chip division’s pretax margin fell five percentage points, from 29% to 24%. 1

For fiscal Q1 2027, Qualcomm guides to $10.4 billion–$11.2 billion in revenue and $2.15–$2.35 in adjusted EPS, with midpoints of $10.8 billion and $2.25. It cites higher industry input costs and expects the full benefit of pricing responses in QCT gross margins only in the second half of fiscal 2027. Management also projects more than 60% growth in non-handset revenue and reiterates a $5 billion data-center revenue target for fiscal 2027. Those are company expectations, not achieved results or guaranteed offsets to weaker phones. 1

AMD was down 12.13%, Broadcom 6.31% and semiconductor fund SOXX 8.78% in those nearby snapshots. That puts QCOM inside a broader sector selloff; it does not prove that one company’s earnings caused every decline. The macro backdrop was mixed with the company’s own cost pressures: the November 5 BLS report showed nonfarm-business productivity up 3.6% and unit labor costs down 0.7% in Q3, both seasonally adjusted annualized quarterly rates. Economy-wide labor costs are not a direct measure of Qualcomm’s wafer or packaging costs. 10 11 12 5

What it means for option sellers

Cboe’s delayed snapshot, retrieved at 11:24 ET, displayed 30-day implied volatility of 60.754%, rounded here to 60.75%, and an underlying last-trade time of 11:08:17 ET. Prices were 15-minute delayed at the time of writing; check live prices before trading. IV rank was not verified, and this reading is not an individual option quote or a probability of profit. No verified before-and-after comparison supports an “IV crush” claim here. 4

For the wheel, a cash-secured put still means accepting possible share ownership at the strike, even after a further plunge. A covered call provides only a limited premium cushion while capping the stock’s upside during the option’s life. For example, a hypothetical $165 covered-call strike would set a $165 share-sale price if assigned; it is not a verified listed contract or an entry recommendation. The next earnings date was not independently confirmed, so no expiry is certified earnings-free. 7 8

Main risk: the premium is only a limited cushion

A large premium cannot stop a stock from falling through the strike. Higher input costs, customer concentration and execution of the data-center ramp remain business risks. Selling another option does not remove the underlying exposure or make a recovery inevitable. 1 7

Educational example — not a current option quote

Assume a standard 100-share put with a $145 strike and an invented $2-per-share premium. Assignment requires $14,500; the $200 credit gives a $143 breakeven before all fees. If shares finish at $130, the expiry P/L is ($130 − $145 + $2) × 100 = −$1,300: a loss. The strike, premium and scenario are hypothetical, with no claim of contract availability. 7

Risk checks and reassessment

  • Liquidity: a current bid/ask spread and realistic fill matter more than a large displayed premium.
  • Assignment: the cash commitment and willingness to hold shares matter even when the stock looks cheaper.
  • Reassessment: a changed business outlook is a reason to revisit the thesis; rolling is not a guaranteed repair.

What to watch next — with dates

  • November 6, 08:30 ET: October US employment report. November 10, 08:30 ET: October CPI. Both can reset the broad market backdrop. 6
  • December 3: record date for Qualcomm’s $0.92 dividend; December 17: payment date. A record date is not automatically an independently verified ex-dividend date; covered-call early-assignment exposure needs a fresh calendar check. 9 8
  • Fiscal 2027: evidence that non-handset growth and pricing can support margins. The second-half timing is management’s expectation, not a promised result; await an officially confirmed next earnings date. 1
