Key takeaways
- SOFI closed Friday at US$16.76, down 4.83%, but still 15.91% above its pre-earnings close.
- Lending and deposits grew; the technology platform remained a weak spot.
- A weekend volatility reading is not a live premium or proof of a bargain.
- November 3 job openings and November 6 payrolls are the next macro checkpoints.

SoFi’s earnings rally hit a setback on Friday, October 30: the shares closed at US$16.76, down US$0.85 from Thursday’s US$17.61. That is a 4.83% decline, not a new Saturday trading move. All money figures here are U.S. dollars; prices are historical, and markets are shut for the weekend.1
What Friday changed
The daily history table records 64,168,800 shares traded, versus a calculated 54,291,080-share average over the preceding 20 sessions, October 2–29. Friday’s turnover was therefore 18.19% above that comparison. The day’s US$16.44–US$17.32 range shows that the closing loss was not just a quiet, unchanged session.1
Yet the stock remained 15.91% above its US$14.46 October 26 close, before the October 27 earnings release. The distinction matters: one bad day reduced the rally without erasing it. For a put seller, a pullback after a rally is not automatically a discounted entry.12

Why the sell-off needs context
SoFi did not fall alone. Financial-platform comparison stocks Robinhood and Upstart closed Friday down 7.21% and 7.33%, respectively. They are not identical businesses, but their larger losses put SOFI’s move in a broader risk-taking context. Price co-movement does not establish a single cause for every sale.34
The rate backdrop also remains demanding for a lender. On October 28, the Federal Reserve held its target range at 3.75%–4.00%; two dissenters preferred a quarter-point increase. That is context, not proof that the Fed caused Friday’s drop. YieldCove’s reading is that strong growth still has to survive funding costs and credit risk.5
The business improved, but not evenly
| Measure | Value | Basis |
|---|---|---|
| Q3 net revenue | US$1.385 billion | GAAP actual; +44% year over year |
| Q3 net income / diluted EPS | US$241.0 million / US$0.18 | GAAP actual |
| 2026 adjusted net revenue | US$5.04 billion | Management guidance; non-GAAP |
| 2027 adjusted net revenue | About US$6.4 billion | Management outlook; non-GAAP |
The support for the rally was tangible. Quarterly loan originations reached US$16.9 billion, up 71% year over year, while deposits grew US$5.8 billion during the quarter to US$51.3 billion. Net interest margin reached 6.14%. These numbers help explain the growth story, but the 2026 and 2027 outlooks are forecasts, not already-earned revenue.2
- Funding: deposits supplied 90% of average total liabilities during Q3; the funding mix matters to lending economics.2
- Credit: loan growth also increases the importance of defaults, recoveries and valuation assumptions; growth alone is not a safety measure.
- Diversification: Technology Platform revenue fell 24% year over year to US$87.4 million, including a large client’s departure. Not every engine accelerated.2
What it means for option sellers
Cboe’s delayed weekend snapshot displayed 30-day implied volatility of 45.625%, rounded here to 45.63%. It was retrieved October 31, and its latest stock-trade date was October 30. This is a weekend reference, not a live executable quote. A comparable IV rank was not verified, so this article does not claim that premiums are historically rich.6
For the wheel, the earnings release is behind the stock, but assignment risk remains. A hypothetical US$15 put sits 10.50% below Friday’s close; a US$18 covered call sits 7.40% above it. These are educational round-number comparisons, not recommended strikes, available orders or a rated setup. The call can cap a rebound while leaving substantial stock downside.189
Illustration, not a market quote
Assume a standard 100-share US$15 put and an invented US$0.20-per-share premium. Cash reserved is US$1,500; credit is US$20; expiry breakeven is US$14.80 before fees. At a US$12 expiry share price, the loss is US$280. This assumed premium is not today’s bid or ask.8
What to watch next
The next useful checkpoints are dated economic releases, not an assumed immediate earnings repeat. The BLS calendar lists the following Eastern times; schedules can change. A confirmed next SoFi earnings date was not established for this article, so any expiry choice requires a fresh company-calendar check.7
| Date | Release | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| November 3, 10:00 a.m. | September job openings | Labour-demand and rate expectations |
| November 6, 8:30 a.m. | October employment report | Household-income and credit backdrop |
| November 10, 8:30 a.m. | October CPI | Inflation and funding-rate expectations |
- Watch whether the US$16.44 Friday low and US$17.61 prior close become useful reference points, not guaranteed support or resistance.1
- Rebuild live prices, spreads and the event calendar before trading; weekend data cannot establish Monday’s execution price.
- Judge future updates on funding, credit and actual revenue delivery rather than treating the forecast as a promise.
Friday created a different question from Tuesday’s earnings rally: how much business risk remains after the share price comes back down? Better operating figures and a falling stock can coexist. The practical distinction is between being paid to accept an obligation and assuming that the obligation has become safe. For the wheel, the potential share ownership matters at least as much as the premium collected.
A pullback changes the entry price. It does not remove the obligation attached to a short option.
