Key takeaways

  • Amazon’s AWS sales grew 39.3%, but a larger cash deficit complicated the earnings story. [1]
  • The stock fell further after an already weak regular session. These are timestamped snapshots, not live offers. [2][3]
  • The US$42.4 billion free-cash outflow covers twelve months, not one quarter. [1]
  • Option sellers still face overnight repricing and assignment risk. [7][8]

What happened after the close

Amazon released September-quarter results on October 29 with a split message: faster cloud growth and a record operating margin, but much heavier cash spending. Yahoo Finance recorded US$231.37 at 16:22:12 ET in extended trading, down US$12.42, or 5.09%, from the regular close. This is an observed post-release price, not a forecast or executable quote. All amounts below are U.S. dollars. [1][2][3]

The stock had already closed at $243.79, down $10.81, or 4.25%, from October 28’s $254.60. Yahoo’s regular-session volume count was 70,829,326 shares, about 1.99 times the preceding 20-session average of 35,510,570. That earlier decline happened before the results; it should not be attributed to the release. [2]

The operating business strengthened

Revenue rose 12% to $201.944 billion from $180.169 billion. Operating income increased 61% to $28.076 billion, producing the company’s record 13.9% operating margin. AWS supplied $45.984 billion of sales, up 39.3%, and $17.773 billion of operating income. The cloud business generated roughly 63.3% of group operating income despite a much smaller share of sales. The EPS decline needs context. Last year’s quarter included $9.5 billion of pretax gains from Anthropic investments. Comparing the two bottom lines without that difference would obscure the improvement in operating profit. It does not mean investment gains are recurring operating earnings, or that this quarter’s GAAP EPS should be treated as adjusted earnings. [1]

Cash is the harder question. Trailing operating cash flow reached $168.300 billion, but net property-and-equipment purchases totaled $210.657 billion, leaving negative free cash flow of $42.357 billion. The comparable year-earlier figure was positive $14.788 billion. Amazon says the spending increase primarily reflects artificial-intelligence investment; its 2026 cash-capital-expenditure forecast remains about $220 billion. [1]

The distinction
Faster cloud sales and a deeper cash deficit can both be true. Operating profit is not free cash flow. [1]

Why the market still has questions

The retail headline also needs a calendar adjustment. Prime Day moved into the second quarter in most large countries; Amazon estimates that this reduced third-quarter sales growth by about four percentage points. Advertising grew 11% in reported dollars, versus 26% in Q2. Management expects high-teens advertising growth in Q4, but that remains an outlook, not an achieved rebound. [1]

Cloud demand is not uniquely Amazon’s story. Microsoft reported 48% Azure revenue growth for its September quarter. AWS and Azure have different business scopes and revenue bases, so their growth rates are not a market-share calculation. The useful comparison is whether rapid growth can support returns on new infrastructure, not simply which percentage is larger. [1][4]

There is a consumer constraint too. The BEA’s October 29 release showed September spending rising 0.5% in current dollars, but less than 0.1% after inflation. Core PCE inflation was 3.1% year over year. The Fed held its policy range at 3.75%–4.00% on October 28. That is relevant context for retail demand and financing costs, not proof of why one stock moved. [5][6]

What it means for option sellers

The release is out, but that does not make an overnight position low risk. Current post-report implied volatility and IV rank were not independently confirmed for this article. Pre-release premiums cannot be treated as tomorrow’s available income. Any volatility decline after earnings may be outweighed by a large move in the underlying stock. [7][8]

Assignment can overwhelm the premium

A cash-secured put can turn into ownership of shares worth much less than the strike. The wheel does not erase that loss: selling covered calls afterward limits upside while retaining downside exposure. The October 30 session will be the first full regular session after this report. [7][8]

Educational arithmetic—not a quoted trade

A hypothetical standard $220 put sold for an assumed $2 per share brings in $200 on 100 shares and requires $22,000 of strike cash. Expiry breakeven is $218 per share. Maximum option profit is $200; loss could reach $21,800 if the shares became worthless, before fees and taxes. No such premium or executable contract is claimed here. [7]

Likewise, a hypothetical $250 covered-call strike means accepting a possible sale of the covered shares at $250, even if the stock later trades higher. Whether that realizes a stock profit depends on the share cost, premium and fees. It is an illustration of the obligation, not a suggested strike or a claim of attractive yield. [8]

  • Separate regular-session prices, extended-hours prices and next-session option quotes. [2][3]
  • Review Q4 guidance and cash spending together, rather than treating AWS growth alone as the thesis. [1]
  • Check live prices, spreads and the event calendar before assessing any contract. [7][8]

For the holiday quarter, Amazon guides revenue of $240–247 billion and operating income of $28.5–33.5 billion. Those ranges make the next test concrete: delivery of growth without losing sight of the cash required to fund it. This article covers the release and the saved price snapshot, not a transcript of the earnings call. [1]
