August 3 market wrap: Nasdaq jumps 2.13% as yields fall
U.S. equities rebounded broadly on August 3, 2026, led by a 2.13% Nasdaq gain. The VIX barely eased to 15.86 as the 10-year Treasury yield fell five basis points, keeping the wheel lens focused on ticker-specific range and collateral.

A broad rebound led by the Nasdaq
U.S. equities finished sharply higher on Monday, August 3, 2026. The S&P 500 closed at 7,600.50, up 110.78 points, or 1.48%. The Nasdaq Composite led the three major benchmarks with a 540.05-point, 2.13% gain to 25,913.90. The Dow Jones Industrial Average added 693 points, or 1.32%, to 53,178. These are regular-session closing levels, not live quotes; the ticker strip above updates separately.
| Market | Close | Daily move |
|---|---|---|
| S&P 500 | 7,600.50 | +1.48% |
| Nasdaq Composite | 25,913.90 | +2.13% |
| Dow Jones Industrial Average | 53,178 | +1.32% |
| Cboe VIX | 15.86 | −0.81% |
The Nasdaq’s lead describes a growth-heavy rebound, but it does not establish that every technology stock or option shared the same risk profile. The close is best read as a snapshot: all three broad benchmarks rose, while the index-level volatility gauge moved only modestly lower. That difference matters when separating market direction from the price of insurance on one company.
Rates eased; the VIX barely did
The U.S. Treasury’s official curve placed the 2-year par yield at 4.25%, down 3 basis points from July 31. The 10-year yield was 4.70%, down 5 basis points, and the 30-year yield was 5.23%, down 4 basis points. Lower yields and higher stock indexes moved together in Monday’s closing snapshot, but this article does not infer that the rate move alone caused the equity rally.
| Maturity | August 3 | July 31 | Change |
|---|---|---|---|
| 2-year | 4.25% | 4.28% | −3 bps |
| 10-year | 4.70% | 4.75% | −5 bps |
| 30-year | 5.23% | 5.27% | −4 bps |
Volatility did not collapse
The Cboe VIX closed at 15.86, only 0.13 point, or 0.81%, below Friday’s 15.99 despite the large index gains. VIX measures expected S&P 500 volatility; it is not a quote for a META or NVDA option, and single-stock implied volatility can move differently.
Wheel watch: META and NVDA
Meta Platforms closed at $590.24, up $33.53, or 6.02%, from Friday’s $556.71. A move of that size changes the distance between the stock and any fixed strike, but the closing stock price says nothing by itself about an option’s bid, ask, implied volatility or open interest. Those fields require a fresh contract-specific quote.
Nvidia finished at $206.64, up $5.89, or 2.93%, from $200.75. The gain was smaller than META’s but larger than the S&P 500’s. For wheel education, that comparison highlights why index direction cannot substitute for ticker-level range, liquidity, event timing and the willingness to hold the underlying through an assignment.

What the close does—and does not—show
Monday’s rebound, lower Treasury yields and nearly unchanged VIX are verified session facts. They do not identify a favourable option entry or strike. Option premiums are quoted per share, one standard contract represents 100 shares, and cash-secured-put collateral depends on the strike rather than the stock’s percentage gain.
The next-session checklist
- Whether Nasdaq leadership broadens beyond the strongest growth names or narrows again.
- Whether the 10-year Treasury yield holds below Monday’s 4.70% close or reverses the five-basis-point decline.
- Whether VIX moves materially away from 15.86 while META and NVDA option quotes reflect their own ticker-specific risks.
This framework keeps the close useful without turning one strong session into a forecast. The index, volatility and rate tables are fixed to August 3, 2026; any option comparison belongs to a new, timestamped broker snapshot with expiry, strike, bid/ask width, open interest and full collateral shown together.
