Chip rebound lifts Nasdaq as yields and VIX ease
The Nasdaq led a higher U.S. close after softer inflation data pulled Treasury yields lower and chip shares rebounded. VIX eased, but sharp NVDA and AMD ranges kept single-stock risk in focus.

Close in one line
A softer-than-expected June inflation report pulled Treasury yields lower and helped semiconductors rebound, lifting the Nasdaq more than the S&P 500 while the Dow finished almost unchanged.
The close: growth led, but the Dow barely moved
U.S. equities finished higher on Tuesday, July 14, 2026. The S&P 500 added 28.25 points, or 0.38%, to 7,543.59. The Nasdaq Composite gained 233.83 points, or 0.90%, to 26,107.01. The Dow Jones Industrial Average rose just 9.63 points, or 0.02%, to 52,508.27. AP and CNBC both tied the lift to the cooler inflation report and a rebound in chip shares; CNBC also noted that IBM's sharp decline held back the Dow. The result was a constructive close, but not a uniform risk-on session.
| Market | Close | Point change | Percent change | Read-through |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| S&P 500 | 7,543.59 | +28.25 | +0.38% | Broad market recovered part of Monday's decline |
| Nasdaq Composite | 26,107.01 | +233.83 | +0.90% | Technology and chip rebound led |
| Dow Jones Industrial Average | 52,508.27 | +9.63 | +0.02% | Nearly flat as IBM offset strength elsewhere |
Rates and volatility confirmed the relief—but not complacency
The U.S. Treasury's official daily par-yield curve moved lower after the inflation release. The 2-year yield fell to 4.18% from 4.26%, the 10-year to 4.58% from 4.62%, and the 30-year to 5.08% from 5.10%. On Cboe's delayed dashboard, VIX stood at 16.50 versus a 17.16 previous close, a decline of about 3.85%. The combination says the broad market's immediate stress premium eased, yet VIX remained above its July 10 close of 15.03; one calmer session did not erase Monday's volatility reset.
| Maturity | July 13 | July 14 | Change |
|---|---|---|---|
| 2-year | 4.26% | 4.18% | −8 bp |
| 10-year | 4.62% | 4.58% | −4 bp |
| 30-year | 5.10% | 5.08% | −2 bp |
Wheel-relevant tape: NVDA and AMD rebound sharply
Two highly liquid wheel names captured the session's dispersion. Nasdaq recorded NVDA at $211.80, up $8.27 or 4.06%, after a $203.53 previous close. AMD closed at $548.13, up $13.74 or 2.57%, after $534.39. Those gains support CNBC's description of a semiconductor rebound, but they also show why a lower index-level VIX is not the same as quiet single-stock risk: NVDA's intraday range was $203.80–$212.54, while AMD traded between $546.77 and $574.20.
| Ticker | Close | Daily change | Intraday range | Wheel read-through |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| NVDA | $211.80 | +$8.27 / +4.06% | $203.80–$212.54 | Strong rebound, with wide single-name movement |
| AMD | $548.13 | +$13.74 / +2.57% | $546.77–$574.20 | Positive close after a large intraday swing |
What this close does—and does not—say
Falling yields and a lower VIX improved the broad backdrop, while the chip rebound restored some risk appetite. They do not establish a durable trend or make any strike attractive on their own. For wheel education, the useful takeaway is to separate index volatility from ticker-specific range, event risk and assignment exposure before interpreting premium.
