Morning movers: Alibaba jumps 4% on Qwen3.8 preview

Alibaba rose 4.03% before the bell after previewing Qwen3.8, while Ryanair fell 4.87% after profit dropped and Penguin Solutions lost 2.19% as investors digested its convertible-note refinancing. These delayed quotes preserve the scheduled 5:39–5:42 a.m. ET snapshot; recheck live prices because this recovery edition was published after the open.

Recovery edition: scheduled snapshot preserved

The separate July 20 overnight read was not live at the 5:42 a.m. ET quote cut, so this brief does not substitute yesterday’s macro link. This article was recovered after the open and preserves the scheduled premarket snapshot; the prices below are historical, delayed observations rather than current quotes.

Alibaba: a 4% gap on a model preview, not a proven revenue event

Alibaba previewed Qwen3.8-Max-Preview on July 19 during the World Artificial Intelligence Conference in Shanghai. The company described it as a 2.4-trillion-parameter multimodal model and made the preview available through Token Plan, Qoder and QoderWork. BABA traded at $119.60 at 5:42 a.m. ET, up 4.03% from Friday’s $114.97 close; Nasdaq and Yahoo showed the same direction and nearly identical price.

Why it matters: Qwen is central to Alibaba’s cloud and developer push, so a flagship launch can improve sentiment around the platform. It does not establish immediate revenue or margin gains. Friday’s $115.93 high is the first objective gap-support marker; the July 15 high near $121.22 is the next visible reference if early volume confirms the move.

Benchmark claim is not independently verified

Alibaba said Qwen3.8 ranks second only to Anthropic’s Fable 5, but SiliconANGLE found no model card, benchmark table or independent scoring. Treat that ranking as a company claim, not a measured fact.

Options context

Cboe’s Friday BABA chain showed 106,810 contracts of volume and 2,109,559 open interest across listed options, indicating a deep market. Options do not trade premarket, so Friday’s contract prices are not executable opening quotes; spreads and implied volatility need a fresh check after 9:30 a.m. ET.

Ryanair: lower fares and fuel costs squeeze profit

Ryanair reported fiscal Q1 profit after tax of €538 million, down 34% from a year earlier. Revenue rose 1% to €4.38 billion and traffic increased 6% to 61.3 million passengers, but average fares fell 6%. The company said operating costs rose 11% and the price of its 20% unhedged jet fuel more than doubled.

The ADR traded at $59.52 at 5:39 a.m. ET, down 4.87% from $62.57. That price was already below Friday’s $62.50 low. The market is weighing growing traffic against weaker unit economics and limited visibility: Ryanair said it was too early to give meaningful full-year profit guidance.

Thin options read

Cboe’s Friday RYAAY chain showed only 667 contracts of aggregate volume and 3,791 open interest, too thin for a useful pre-open wheel read. After 9:30 a.m. ET, the cleaner questions are whether the ADR can reclaim $62.50 and whether the wide early spread narrows.

Penguin Solutions: refinancing benefits meet dilution risk

Penguin Solutions disclosed that it issued $750 million of 0.00% convertible senior notes due 2031 after purchasers exercised the full $100 million option. Estimated net proceeds were $735.1 million. The company is refinancing portions of its 2029 and 2030 notes, paying capped-call costs, repaying $100 million under a credit agreement and retaining the balance for general corporate purposes.

PENG was $59.09 at 5:41 a.m. ET, down 2.19% from Friday’s $60.41 close after losing 8.43% in Friday’s regular session. The premarket print sat just below Friday’s $59.53 low; $65.21 was Friday’s high. Extending maturities helps flexibility, while note conversion, exchanged-note shares and hedging can still affect dilution and near-term flows.

Financing mechanics can move the tape

The SEC filing says noteholders and capped-call counterparties may buy or sell shares and adjust hedges. That does not predict direction, but it can amplify volume around the refinancing.

Options context

Cboe’s Friday PENG chain showed 8,037 contracts of volume and 81,469 open interest. Aggregate activity is meaningful, but individual spreads still need to be checked after 9:30 a.m. ET before treating any quote as usable.

Also on the radar

  • MU +3.53% at 5:42 a.m. ET on 630,501 premarket shares. No fresh tier-1 or tier-2 company catalyst was found, so the move remains a sentiment rebound rather than a featured story. MU is also on Eddie’s live watchlist.
  • FRVO +5.19% at 5:36 a.m. ET, but on only 6,093 premarket shares. Friday’s BofA upgrade remained visible; no new Monday development was verified.
  • SYRE +6.99% at 4:01 a.m. ET represented only 49 shares with a $91.45 bid and $107.41 ask. No fresh confirmed catalyst was found, so the isolated print was dropped from the feature list.

What to watch today

  • At the 9:30 a.m. ET open: the first check was whether each premarket move survived regular liquidity; thin prints can disappear quickly.
  • From 9:30 to 10:00 a.m. ET: the scheduled checkpoints were BABA above $115.93, RYAAY reclaiming $62.50, and PENG retaking $59.53 on confirmed volume.
  • After the open: refresh live stock prices, option spreads and implied volatility. Friday chain data and the preserved premarket snapshot are context, not a live ticket.
