Fed hold sends Dow down 2.19% as VIX jumps above 20
U.S. stocks sold off on July 29 as the Federal Reserve held rates in a 9–3 vote, the 10-year Treasury yield rose to 4.67%, and the VIX closed at 20.66. AAPL and MSFT fell less than the broad indexes, but the volatility reset raises the price of assignment risk as well as option premiums.

S&P 500: five official-session closes
July 23–29, 2026; weekends omitted

The Fed held; the vote carried the surprise
The Federal Open Market Committee kept the federal-funds target range at 3.50%–3.75% in a 9–3 vote. Beth Hammack, Neel Kashkari and Lorie Logan dissented in favour of a 25-basis-point increase. The statement said activity was expanding at a solid pace while inflation remained above the Committee’s 2% goal. The combination of an unchanged rate and three hike dissents made the vote more restrictive than a simple “hold” headline suggests.
Rates repriced higher
The U.S. Treasury’s daily par-yield curve put the 10-year yield at 4.67% on July 29, up from 4.61% on July 28—a 6-basis-point increase. The 2-year yield eased to 4.22% from 4.26%, leaving a steeper 2s10s curve.
AAPL and MSFT through a wheel lens
Two liquid names on YieldCove’s live wheel watchlist held up better than the indexes during the regular session. AAPL closed at $338.19, down 0.56%, while MSFT closed at $390.54, down 0.71%. That relative resilience is a tape observation, not evidence that assignment risk is low; company events and after-hours trading can change the setup before the next option session.
More premium is not free income
A VIX above 20 can coincide with wider option premiums, but those premiums compensate for larger expected moves. An educational wheel review still needs expiry-specific implied volatility, the next earnings date, skew, liquidity and fully reserved cash—not just today’s index close or a live quote.
