Morning movers: Intel gains 4.77% on talks, not a signed deal

Intel rallies on reported chip talks, while Trip.com’s earnings and Axon’s financing tell different stories. For option sellers, the key is separating potential business from results and funding risk.

Macro backdrop: today’s Morning Read.

Intel is rallying on the possibility of a manufacturing arrangement, not a signed customer order. Trip.com offers actual earnings to dissect, while Axon has moved from proposing a financing to pricing it. For option sellers, these are different risks, not interchangeable bullish signals. [1–6]

The early price picture

September 16, 2026 — delayed snapshot at 05:45 ET, America/Toronto. Pre-market means trading before the regular session, often with fewer participants. All share prices are USD; changes compare with the September 15 close. The table gives each last-trade time, not a common execution time: Axon’s print is especially old. These observations are not executable prices. [9–14,20]

$INTC — talks are not a booked order

On September 16, CNBC reported, citing Reuters, that SK hynix and Intel were exploring US memory-chip production. A lease at Intel’s Ohio site was one possible structure; the report described exploratory discussions with no decision made. Neither company immediately responded to CNBC. This is a reported negotiation, not company confirmation of a definitive agreement. [1]

The attraction is better use of expensive industrial capacity and potential cost sharing. But renting space is not automatically a win for Intel’s contract-chipmaking business, and the structure determines who earns which margin. SK hynix and its AI customers are the supply-chain read-through; prospective capacity is not available supply today. South Korean sensitivity around advanced-memory technology is another hurdle described in the report. [1]

A report-driven gap can reverse

A denial or less attractive deal structure would change the story quickly. A cash-secured put still carries share-ownership risk after such a reversal. Cboe’s active contracts last traded September 15; those historical markets do not establish today’s opening premium or implied volatility—the uncertainty priced into options. [1,17]

At 09:30 ET, the question is whether the gain persists with broader participation. The prior close and delayed print in the table are gap references, not proven support or resistance. A company statement would matter more than another repetition of the same report. [1,9,14]

$TCOM — adjusted profit does not erase a GAAP loss

Trip.com’s September 15 results put growth and regulatory costs side by side. Second-quarter revenue rose 6% to RMB15.7 billion. Adjusted diluted earnings were USD 1.07 per American depositary share, but the GAAP result was a USD 0.57 loss per share. The adjustment excludes a RMB5.18 billion antitrust penalty along with other specified items; adjusted profit is not the statutory bottom line. [2–4]

International expansion supports revenue, yet marketing investment and changes to the domestic partner framework complicate the margin picture. Booking Holdings and Expedia are useful travel-demand comparisons, not identical regulatory exposures. Management’s call was September 15 at 20:00 ET; today is about interpreting those results, not waiting for an unannounced new call. [2–3]

The earnings event passed; the business risk remains

After earnings, option-implied uncertainty can fall even while the stock rises. Historical September 15 option activity does not measure that repricing. A short put retains exposure to weaker margins or disruption as partners adapt; an earnings headline alone is not a complete profit story. [2–3,18]

$AXON — financing terms are not an earnings upgrade

Axon said on September 16 that it had priced the convertible borrowing proposed the previous day. The principal amount remains USD 1 billion, with no regular coupon. These are bonds that may convert into shares, not a direct common-share sale; pricing also does not mean the financing has already settled. [5–6]

Axon intends to fund capped-call transactions, then use remaining proceeds for general corporate purposes. Those hedges aim to reduce potential dilution within limits, not abolish it. The mechanism is balance-sheet funding and dilution risk rather than a change in customer orders. Motorola Solutions offers a public-safety comparison, but this financing is specific to Axon. [5]

A small early rebound proves little

The last trade shown is 05:02 ET, so it is not a fresh opening assessment. Financing-related hedging can affect shares in either direction. September 15 option markets are historical; neither a small stock bounce nor a zero coupon makes the downside disappear. [5,11,19]

Reported talks and earnings outpace the financing rebound

Change (%) versus September 15 close; delayed September 16 trades at 05:45:32, 05:26:27 and 05:02:00 ET respectively. Different trade clocks; not executable. [9–11,20]

Also on the radar

  • $NOK — Nokia announced expanded operator trials of AI-native radio networks on September 16; the commercial test is conversion from trials into paid deployments, not an assumed revenue windfall. [7]
  • $CAVA — weaker August industry dining visits put traffic and promotions in focus; calendar shifts explain part of the sector reading, which is not a $CAVA-specific sales warning. [8]

What to watch today — September 16, ET

  • 09:30 — regular-session opening: compare the three prior closes with the opening auctions as liquidity broadens. [9–11,14]
  • During the session — Intel company responses, interpretation of Trip.com’s margins, and Axon financing or hedging developments. These are unscheduled possibilities, not promised announcements. [1–6]
